Guyana's Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud is urging fishermen to register for a voluntary program that installs submersible radios and GPS system on their boats, saying it would help authorities find them in an emergency. He also says the government will create a fund to help them replace stolen equipment, with fishermen contributing an undetermined sum each month. Suriname has a different solution. The minister of Justice and Police there said authorities are considering issuing firearms to fishermen, to enable them to protect themselves against the violent attacks of pirates, mostly Guyanese criminals. Pirates killed at least nine fishermen in 2007 and have stolen hauls of Å FISHERMEN' S LIVELIHOODS are so threat- fish, nets, money, outboard engines, ened by pirates, the Guyanese government and even small boats off the coasts of is issuing them GPS units. Caching in Two Wyoming teachers plan to use GPS to help teach their elementary school students about geology and other earth sciences, and have scored a Qwest Foundation grant for their efforts, reports the StarTribune of Casper, Wyoming. Teachers Lynn Ahrndt and Kelly Toups plan to teach their fifth- and sixth-grade students at Park Elementary in Casper about EarthCaching, which involves studying and compiling information about area geologies. Students will learn GPS technology, take field trips to enhance their understanding of local geology, and share their work with students at their school and beyond. In EarthCaching (www.earthcache. org), students use GPS technology to find certain landmarks or locations. EarthCaching was developed with the Geological Society of America, with sites listed around the world, from Portugal to Idaho. The $5,000 in Qwest grant money will be used to purchase GPS devices for students, along with cameras so students can take pictures of the sites. The students will use GPS to map several EarthCaching locations in Casper. The GPS devices are intended to teach students about mapping, while taking part in EarthCaching teaches them about local geography. sy of www.e arthcache.or g A Peek in Time Mom-and-pop diners off the beaten path have an influx of new customers because of GPS use, reports the Pekin (Illinois) Daily Times. ª We had two couples come in one night and since we're small we know a lot of people who come in, said Diana Flatley, co-owner of the Olde Towne Bar º and Grille in Delavan. She said the waitress asked the couples how they had heard of the Olde Towne. ª They told the waitress that they were going down (Illinois Highway) 155 when their car GPS system popped up the Olde Town Bar and Grille, said Flatº ley. ª We were on their GPS system. º Ted Gartner of Garmin said he has no official data on the number of small businesses benefiting from GPS devices. ª We've all heard a lot of anecdotal stories of people who say ` Gee ever since these GPS devices came out we've picked up a lot of business', Gartner said. ª At one time or º another there was probably a Navteq employee who drove past (Olde Towne Bar and Grille) and put it in their database. º COPYRIGHT 2008 QUESTEX MEDIA GROUP, INC.
