I had thought, after concluding this month' s 50 Leaders to Watch article, to quietly wrap it up and put it away on the shelf. Not to be continued next year. We' ve had a three-year run, and it' s been a good one. But how many leaders can there be, worthy of watching? You get to 150 , you feel a bit long in the tooth. I even gave some consideration to topping this month' s article at 40 . But the GNSS community carries much more breadth, depth, enthusiasm, and creativity than I had grokked, even after eight years of covering nearly every aspect of it. The GNSS community carries much more breadth, depth, enthusiasm, and creativity than I had grokked. I put out the call for nominations in late March. Just so you know, here' s how it works. The request goes to members of our Editorial Advisory Board, the magazine' s contributing editors, and all the past 50 leaders from the May 2006 and 2007 issues. The only rules are that the nominees can be neither members of our Advisory Board (who consistently draw votes despite this stricture), nor previous leaders from the last two years, nor members of the nominator' s own company or organization. The e-mails rolled in steadily, all through the month of April, until we reached 50. It' s funny how that has worked each year. Without winnowing or elimination, or prompting on my part, more than just a teense, somehow each year the number arrives right at or just above 50, like the needle on a scale, indicating a constant weight. I have heard it bruited about, behind shielding hands when no one thought I was listening, that this feature, and a few others published here, constitute mere fluff, or eye candy. It' s not hardcore science or technology, and thus not useful to bench engineers. Allow me to beg to disagree. GNSS, with GPS at its base, is strictly and soundly a human force. It may consist in some parts of electrons and waves and etched silicon, but it was created to fulfill very humanistic desires. Military, you say? In a very narrow view, perhaps. But even in that view, its driver was the desire to drop a bomb in the same hole, the right hole, time after time. To reduce or eliminate civilian casualties in conflict, causing only the damage strictly necessary. From the beginning, the founders envisioned wider civilian uses. Early use came in survey Ð and territoriality is a building block of society. Fast forward to many current and coming uses to make airways, roadways, and seaways safer, cut gas guzzling and pollution, warn of tsunamis and earthquakes, hasten emergency response, and much more. It' s technology, but as all technology, it has a human core. And as we see here, many human faces to watch as they generate and implement new ideas. Tony Murfin says it on page 59: ª I' ve never seen the level of intensity and variety in any industry that I see today in the GNSS industry and the people who work in it.º QUESTEX WORLDWIDE HEADQUARTERS 275 Grove Street, Newton, MA 02466, USA 617-219-8300 | Toll-Free 888-552-4346 | Fax 617-219-8310 MANUSCRIPTS: GPS World welcomes unsolicited articles but cannot be held responsible for their safekeeping or return.
