Hotel & Motel Management - February 4, 2008 - (Page 32) 32 Technology ENERGY MANAGEMENT H&MM February 4, 2008 | HotelMotel.com www.HotelMotel.com/digital_edition Energy management has always been a big cost-cutting measure for hoteliers. But given the recent focus on sustainability initiatives, it now is a way for the industry to cater to a growing segment of eco-conscious travelers. “We know the typical room is unoccupied for about 11 to 11.5 hours a day,” said Rami Belson, president of Energex. “Setting back the temperature a few degrees during that time is beneficial. We’ve found that between $120 and $150 per year, per room is a reasonable savings estimate.” William Fizer, president of Lodging Technology, said four factors determine the cost of energy at a property: local climate, local cost of energy, the type of heating/cooling unit in use and the type of hotel. Lodging Technology’s GEM system, he said, reduces the overall cost by 35 percent to 45 percent. Energy-management system vendors also are noticing the green guest. “People look at energy conservation as something that should be initiated by the guest,” Stop using your vacuum cleaner as CHANGES YOUR VACUUM FROM A BATTERING RAM a battering ram that dents furniture, scratches baseboards, bangs up doors and walls. And leads to bruising repair bills. Instead, tame the beast with a Soft Vac Protective Vacuum Cover. • Ends vacuum damage forever • Installs in seconds with Velcro tabs • Soft, durable cordoura fabric outside • High-density foam rubber inside • Eliminates costly repair bills • Extends vacuum cleaner life • Increases housekeeping productivity • There’s a Soft Vac model to fit any vacuum To learn more, contact your distributor, or call us at or visit said John Tavares, v.p. of marketing for Inncom International. “We introduced an eco-mode thermostat so guests can say, ‘It’s OK to save even more energy for me.’ Participation is playing a big role.” EMS efficiency by scale Managing energy efficiency in the guestroom is important at all levels. Even at the budget level, digital thermostats can adjust depending on occupancy. “Sometimes the energy consumption in the room can be 50 percent of the total utility bill,” said John Tavares, v.p. of marketing at Inncom International. On the limited-service side, Tavares said 80 percent of energy consumption can be from the guestroom at hotels without heated pools. For upscale properties, Energex teamed with Cisco on a new Internet protocol. Guests can control temperature and lighting settings from a digital screen on a telephone equipped with Doppler radar. “You don’t need a thermostat on the wall,” said Rami Belson, president of Energex.
