But some of the cost of hotels’ bedding programs is coming due, said Greg Eubanks, group v.p. of hospitality sales and marketing, Standard Textile. “What we will see in 2008 is a focus on reducing operational cost and environmental impact while people try to upgrade their bedding,” Eubanks said, adding that some hotels haven’t looked as closely at the operational costs of the new bedding in the past. Carol Moran, president, A 1 Textiles, agreed that upgraded bedding takes a bigger toll on called Room Ready for You and features products laundered with Tide. Bedding costs 30 cents to 45 cents a pound to process. New linen costs even more because it must be removed from a box, and the folded product must go through shake out. “It can be a real operational hassle,” Eubanks said. If laundry is 40 cents a pound, for a king flat sheet that weighs 2.2 pounds, hotels will avoid 88 cents for every sheet put directly into service, he said. Prewashed products also help the environment by saving water because they are washed while they are already wet during the manufacturing process. face LIFTS The Eden Roc Renaissance Beach Resort & Spa in Miami Beach (Fla.) embarked on a $170-million transformation to be completed in late 2008. Renovations will be made to all 349 guestrooms of the existing tower, pools and cabanas, spa, restaurants, meeting space and retail options, as well as the creation of a 21-story, 283guestroom tower. The Travelodge Kissimmee (Fla.) became Holiday Inn Main Gate East and debuted $10 million in renovations, including updated rooms, a redesigned lobby and new Italian tile flooring. The Sheraton Indianapolis City Centre Hotel is completing a $10-million renovation to its lobby, guestrooms, pool and Panorama Ballroom. Nashville’s Union Station–A Wyndham Historic Hotel debuted a $10-million renovation. Highlights are: a complete restoration; redressing of the station’s original design and architecture; a new restaurant, Prime 108; installation of a new marble floor in the lobby; new marble in all bathrooms; and guestroom makeovers. The Residence Inn by Marriott Philadelphia/ Conshohocken (Pa.) completed a $1.7-million renovation. The project features new carpet, furniture and art in the guestrooms, a refurbished lobby and a business center. Ocean Edge Resort & Club on Cape Cod, Mass., broke ground on a $18.5-million expansion, which includes 7,500 square feet of meeting space and renovations of the historic Nickerson Mansion interior rooms. Compiled by Heather Gunter, hgunter@questex.com Higher-quality bedding is becoming a mainstay in the industry, but the operational costs might be more than expected. the laundry room. “As linen goes upscale and heavier in weight, you’re going to get fewer [items] in a load,” she said. “Sheets have become slightly bigger to fit the larger mattresses that are out there. Duvets are washed more frequently.” Eubanks foresees a push toward prewashed products. Standard Textile’s program is Reading labels STANDARD TEXTILE Thread count is a big buzzword when it comes to bedding, but Greg Eubanks, group v.p. of hospitality sales and marketing, Standard Textile, calls it a complete misnomer. “There’s very little regulation as to how to account for thread count,” he said. Eubanks recommends hotel operators not look blindly at thread counts. Instead, sew competing linens together and launder them repeatedly to determine which sheets have the best feel and durability, he said. The amount of “servings per product” is not consistent, he said. “Whatever your laundry conditions, wash it and see whether it outperforms your current specification,” Eubanks said of evaluating new bed linens.
