Hotel & Motel Management - February 4, 2008 - (Page 38) 38 Hotel Operations LAUNDRY H&MM February 4, 2008 | HotelMotel.com www.HotelMotel.com/digital_edition BY EMILY HANNA, ASSOCIATE EDITOR Less hot water equals less-costly bills With energy costs on the rise and concerns over the environment front of mind, energy management and efficiency become increasingly important for all aspects of a hotel’s operations, but especially in the laundry room. “Efficient laundering practices are vital to longterm environmental benefits,” said Gary Gauthier, marketing manager at Milnor Laundry Systems. In a limited-service hotel, about 30 percent of all hotwater usage stems from laundry systems, said Jack Heaviside, v.p. of global sales and operations at NuTek International. Not only can the amount of water used be conserved but also the amount of natural gas used to heat the water—and the corresponding number of dollars spent on gas. In the 87-room Clarion Hotel in Buffalo, operators had to run the hot water heaters for their laundry systems at 157 degrees. With ozone technology supplied by NuTek International’s Ozone Laundry Support Systems, the hotel was able to lower the temperature needed to clean the laundry to 120 degrees and reduced the need for hot water, which conserved 32 therms of gas (3.2 million British Thermal Units) and is expected to save the hotel more than $10,000 in the first year, Heaviside said. “Ozone uses less water to accomplish the same task as hot water,” Heaviside said. Ozone technology opens the weave of the fabric on contact with water, so soil is released from the fabric immediately, as opposed to in hot water when the weave only opens when exposed to detergents. When the detergent disappears, NUTEK INTERNATIONAL Some hotels use ozone technology, such as Ozone Laundry Support Systems [above] to lower bills. Heaviside said, the weave closes back up and traps the remnants in the fabric, requiring four or five fill-and-drain cycles to clean the fabric, as opposed to two or three with Ozone Laundry Support Systems. Conserving water is crucial, so finding a washing machine that effectively extracts water is imperative, Gauthier said. “Poor washroom practices can be wasteful of resources and costly to a hotel’s bottom line,” he said. The next clean thing Gary Gauthier, marketing manager at Milnor Laundry Systems, recommended finding washers that effectively extract water from fabrics. He offered the following tips for finding the newest addition to a hotel’s laundry room: Depending on what is being laundered, different extraction speeds are necessary. For example, cotton towels need higher extraction speeds, while sheets, pillowcases, table linens and other frequently used items with polyester content don’t require high extraction speeds. Make sure your laundry room has a low rewash rate of goods. High rewash rates in the washroom mean fabrics aren’t laundered correctly the first time and resources are being wasted.
