Hotel & Motel Management - February 4, 2008 - (Page 49) www.HotelMotel.com/digital_edition HotelMotel.com | H&MM February 4, 2008 News 49 Carlson Continued from page 1 egy—from its investments in the Rezidor Hotel Group in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, to its strategy to grow the luxury Regent brand worldwide,” Joly said. “Our largest brand, Radisson, is expanding worldwide.” That global growth plan also characterizes Nelson’s achievements. “I am proud that we have built several globally recognized brands, supported by the Carlson reputation for integrity and industry leadership,” she said. “Most recently, I’m proud of the way we found a win/win approach to growing our Regent brand.” Along with Joly’s appointment, the company in January announced additional executivelevel changes: Paul Kirwin, president and managing director of Carlson Hotels Asia Pacific, will take over as president of Carlson Hotels WorldwideThe Americas. Yvonne LePenotiere, who previously held that role, now takes the newly created role of chief branding officer. Franchise development for all the company’s brands now is under leadership of Nancy Johnson, executive v.p. of franchised operations for full-service hotels. Marilyn Carlson Nelson kept this trunk, a replica of one her greatgrandfather brought to America, in her office. She turned it over to incoming c.e.o. Hubert Joly saying, “This is a precious legacy of our family. It’s the legacies of those who went before, of the people in this room, of the 200,000 people around the world whose personal legacies depend on us.” Family beginnings The Carlson family legacy goes back 70 years, when Curtis L. Carlson founded the Gold Bond Stamp Co. In the late 1960s, the company expanded into hospitali- ty. Worldwide brands now are Regent Hotels & Resorts, Radisson Hotels & Resorts, Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts, Country Inn & Suites by Carlson and Park Inn. Nelson became c.e.o. in 1998, succeeding brother-in-law Edwin Gage. Joly is the first c.e.o. without direct ties to the Carlson family. With this move, the company’s governance splits the role of chairman and c.e.o. This is a European model of governance that Joly called “a great fit for Carlson.” “I believe the family will prefer a family chairman when there is a non-family c.e.o.,” Nelson said. “I also intend to continue to actively advocate for Carlson’s interests in the global business, nonprofit and political communities,” she said. Joly’s background As the head of Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Joly helped the segment grow its sales from $8.9 billion in 2003 to $22 billion in 2007. Before joining CWT, Joly was a member of the executive team of Vivendi Universal and c.e.o. of Vivendi Universal Games, the company’s video games division. From 1996 to 1999, Joly worked in the technology sector, as v.p. of Electronic Data Systems Europe and president of EDS France. Before joining EDS, he spent 12 years in consulting as a partner with McKinsey & Co. Joly’s plans for the company include global growth and expansion and continuation of the leadership roles Nelson espoused. “Marilyn has really transformed this company,” he said during the press conference. sricca@questex.com CARLSON ONLINE EXTRA!
