Often, we will find these outlets in the form of special interest groups. In keeping with its overall W By Barry Brown H&MM Columnist objective to create relevance for its members and to be a vital information source for the industry at-large, the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (www.hsmai.org) has developed SIGs in five industry segments: Internet marketing, revenue management, re- sort marketing, hotel director of sales & marketing, and sales and marketing faculty. Currently, I am chair of the resort marketing SIG, a group I became involved in several years ago in order to participate in the Best Practices Study. The Best Practices Study reports have given me invaluable knowl- edge to assist in running my dayto-day marketing of an independent resort by benchmarking other world-class resorts. As resort marketers, we all share a common goal: to maximize our hotel’s financial potential. It is our job to find out the best, most time-efficient and cost-effective way to do this. The Internet can be one of our strongest allies, provided you take advantage of all it has to offer. Some important strategies and practices to put forward include: Web site planning Establishing infrastructure Closing the loop with customers Keeping score of statistics An advisory board comprised of industry leaders responsible for initiating industry-specific projects and programming leads each HSMAI SIG. Among the SIG initiatives are to stage strategy conferences with expert speakers and panel discussions that are attended by industry professionals. This SIG has played a vital role in connecting me back to HSMAI. I now have a network of peers who share the same issues and desire meaningful communications on specific topics. I cannot get this kind of network anywhere else. The Hotel del Coronado in San Diego will host the 8th annual Resort Conference April 16-18, where resort industry professionals will discuss and explore issues unique to resort marketing and operations. This important industry event is sponsored by HSMAI and the University of Denver’s School of Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management. Industry leaders will offer keynote presentations during general sessions, and there will be an extensive lineup of breakout sessions in three tracks.
