Hotel & Motel Management - March 3, 2008 - (Page 28) 28 Technology H&MM March 3, 2008 | HotelMotel.com www.HotelMotel.com/digital_edition PROPERTY-MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS BY JASON Q. FREED, ASSOCIATE EDITOR PMS for boutiques all about customization In the boutique or independent segments, it’s all about personalization. Boutique hoteliers strive to customize everything in their properties, from the lobby space to the guestroom choices to the thirdparty activity offerings, in order to differentiate themselves. Vendors are making a push to cater to this increasingly popular market, and one industry has it figured out. Property-management system vendors across the industry are tweaking their product to offer maximum customization for the independent hotelier. “It is very important, from a personalized point-of-view, to let guests know exactly what’s available,” said Warren Dehan, Multi-Systems Enterprise PM is a Web-based property-management system. tech TALK Northwind Maestro PMS completed a record number of installations of Maestro PMS, Sales and Catering and other system modules at nine independent, fullservice resorts in the latter half of 2007. Some of the newest Maestro users include the Napili Kai on Maui [Hawaii], the Grand Hotel Cape May [N.J.], the Hotel St. Regis in Detroit, the Price Resort at Cherry Grove Pier in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Benchmark Hospitality’s Bedford [Pa.] Springs Resort. The Holiday Inn Express Wapakoneta [Ohio] purchased Lathern Time’s PayClock Express, an automated time and attendance system for small businesses, featuring an electronic time clock. Three Las Vegas hotelcasinos—Gold Coast Hotel and Casino, The Orleans Hotel and Casino and Suncoast Hotel and Casino—selected Agilysys to provide a comprehensive propertymanagement solution. The properties, all owned by Boyd Gaming Corp., will use the Lodging Management System, integrated software that automates every aspect of hotel operations to streamline efficiency. The company formerly known as SECURE-RES, a hotel Internet marketing provider, launched its new name, Vizergy, and Web site. Vizergy offers Internet advertising, search engine optimization and other Web elements. The company’s name change is coupled with the launch of My Web World, which combines a variety of services designed to deliver long-term growth. Compiled by Jason Q. Freed, jfreed@questex.com president of U.S. operations for Northwind Maestro. Dehan said that at some boutique properties, each guestroom is set up differently so that no two guestrooms look the same. Northwind’s software is built around this premise, so front-desk clerks can allow an incoming guest to easily choose which style of room and what amenities they want in that room. “Boutique hoteliers are trying to offer a comfortable environment where guests can be served,” Dehan said. Victor Vesnaver, v.p. of Quotable “ Our strategy for 2008 is to focus on the Web. We want to add a whole gamut of special requests, allowing guests to book spa treatments, massages and order champagne from home.” WARREN DEHAN, president of U.S. operations for Northwind Maestro hotel systems sales for Micros Systems, said there are some differences in catering to the boutique hotelier that pose challenges. “Every hotel invents the way they want to run their business,” he said. Vesnaver said guest history is very important to owners and management companies these days, and it is important that software at the independent level simulate the guest profiling at the “big box” level as accurately as possible. “At the chain level, you get a certain advantage because profile information is shared,” he said. “In the independent level, you might not necessarily be able to share preference information.” Teresa Galler, v.p. of corporate communications at Multi-Systems, said understanding who guests are and how to reach them is an important tool within PMS. For that reason, Multi-Systems has developed programs with customization as the main priority. “Independent hotels need to be that much more able to offer a personalized service to compete in today’s marketplace,” she said.
