Hotel & Motel Management - March 3, 2008 - (Page 29) HotelMotel.com | H&MM March 3, 2008 Technology 29 PROPERTY-MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS Independents bank on training There are many facets to implementing a propertymanagement system at a site, and training employees on the software is just as important as utilizing the tools. Victor Vesnaver, v.p. of hotel systems sales for Micros Systems, works directly with independent hoteliers. He said training employees on property-management software at an independent property is different than training at brands with big technology operations spread throughout many properties. “The smaller properties don’t have the benefit of working with a large corporate infrastructure who handle things like inventory and revenue management,” Vesnaver said. “Often at the independent level, we have to function much more like a consulting service and help understand what it is they want.” Vesnaver also said oftentimes a management company will manage a string of boutique properties, and Micros is able to set up multi-property sharing. “The functionality, from a marketing and business standpoint, is similar to a major chain,” he said. Warren Dehan, president of U.S. operations for Northwind Maestro, said his company positions itself as a provider for the boutique segment by offering personalized service, including continuous enhancement to alreadyinstalled software. “We’re full service,” he said. “We do the initial project management and we’ll guide the customer, holding their hand as they take the property live with Maestro. We stay on as long as they need, and after that we provide 24/7 support.” Teresa Galler, v.p. of corporate communications at Multi-Systems, said a big part of property-management system setup is training employees at the property level. “We have the ability to set things up in a strategic way, incorporating features such as preconfigured profiles for corporate customers and patterned housekeeping for extended-stay and green hotels,” she said. Involving the third-party In an attempt to offer a more personalized experience for the guest, boutique properties often focus more attention on offering third-party activities as part of a packaged stay.
