RED ROCK CASINO RESORT AND SPA Bring natives back to nature Although native plants are in their natural environment, their integration into the landscaping isn’t without challenges. “Native plants don’t always behave as you would like them to,” said Diego Alessi, principal and landscape architect at Lifescapes International. “Some are more temperamental than others, while some species literally grow out of their shells.” Although going native is environmentally beneficial, it’s not always aesthetically pleasing because it isn’t the traditional look people are used to, said Steve Sullivan, MidAtlantic horticulturalist for The Brickman Group. “Most clients want high curb appeal, and many times that cannot be accomplished using only native plants,” he said. Also, depending on the regional climate, there might be fewer options for native plants. “All regions of the country have native plants, but the further north you go, the plant palette is reduced,” said Hollis Malone, manager of horticulture at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center. To find plants native to your area, Sullivan suggested checking with county extension offices, local universities and area nurseries. Included in the package are a list of kidfriendly activities in the area, a $10 roll of quarters for the resort’s arcade, a s’mores kit (delivered by roomservice), kid’s milk and cookies at turndown, and 50 percent off of Camp Hyatt. Galleria Park Hotel in San Francisco launched “GPS – Galleria Park Suggests.” GPS will provide monthly neighborhood and eventcentric packages, “Top 10” tips, daily guest recommendations and customized tours with Golden Gate Greeters, which allow guests to experience the city like a local. The Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga., offers the Rustic Romance package, which includes an in-room butler-drawn bath, personal lakeside chiminea dinner, rose petal turndown and massage for two. The Romance Package at the Rosen Plaza hotel in Orlando includes dinner and complimentary transportation to the Shingle Creek Golf Club and The Spa at Shingle Creek. Compiled by Stacey Higgins, shiggins@questex.com In an age of environmental caution, it’s even possible to make the greenery greener. By adopting species that are native to the region, the plants would require less acclimation to the climate and the soil conditions, therefore reducing the need for extra irrigation. “Among the many benefits of using native landscaping, the one that adds most importance in this time of water crisis is low to almost no water consumption,” said Diego Alessi, principal and landscape architect at Lifescapes International. Alessi managed the implementation of more than 20,000 trees, shrubs and flowers at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa in Las Vegas, 50 percent of which is native to the area, and 100 percent of which is regional to the Western U.S. InterContinental Hotels Group instated a corporate social responsibility program, which offers guidance to new-build hotels on making environmentally conscious decisions, including native landscaping, according to David Jerome, senior v.p. of corporate social responsibility. “[Native landscaping] is an opportunity to help the local community protect the environment by using less water, less energy and less pesticides while also satisfying business interest with lower operating costs,” he said. Plus, it could have additional benefits for a hotel, such as lowering widespread plant loss due to disease or infestation and attracting birds, butterflies and other local fauna, said Steve Sullivan, Mid-Atlantic divisional horticulturist at The Brickman Group.
