Hotel & Motel Management - May 5, 2008 - (Page 6) Checking In PERSPECTIVE H&MM May 5, 2008 | HotelMotel.com EDITORIAL 600 Superior Ave. East, Suite 1100, Cleveland, OH 44114 Kids these days: A look at the next generation IN THE details Millennials get a voice New category for AH&LA Council to launch in July Focus on employees By Stacey Mieyal Higgins Senior Editor W hen I walked in to the networking reception of the American Hotel & Lodging Assn.’s Under 30 Gateway Council’s inaugural meeting, I thought I would stand out like a tabloid reporter. Boy, was I wrong. It turned out I had a lot more in common with people my age who work in the hotel industry than I thought. First, many of us were nervous about working with our peers—I am more experienced in talking with 50-something corporate executives about investment than with peers about dressing to look older or my favorite episode of “The Office.” We also share the same anxiety about big change. Whether it’s a change in leadership or ownership, many of us are in our first or second jobs. When we’re thrown a curveball, it can feel like the sky just might fall. But we’re also infectiously passionate about our jobs—and mine just happens to overlap with the group of people invited to sit on the council. We were charged with establishing a mission statement and brainstorming ideas for events, benefits and recruitment initiatives for the new membership category. We had a productive meeting, but there still remains much to do. On July 1, the Under 30 Gateway membership category will launch. I believe this membership category and its accompanying education- al opportunities will benefit the age group and the rest of the lodging community. While the industry already is conducting consumer research and designing hotel brands to satisfy the Millennials, it’s about time the focus turned inward to employees. This is an enthusiastic generation that already is making an impact on the industry. shiggins@questex.com Stephanie Ricca, MANAGING EDITOR . . . . . . . sricca@questex.com Ph: (216) 706-3791 | Fax: (216) 706-3711 Stacey Mieyal Higgins, SENIOR EDITOR . . . . . .shiggins@questex.com Ph: (216) 706-3783 | Fax: (216) 706-3711 Heather Gunter, ASSOCIATE EDITOR . . . . . . . hgunter@questex.com Ph: (216) 706-3792 | Fax: (216) 706-3711 Jason Q.
