Keeping them healthy and happy can depend on the cleanliness of the guestroom, and green cleaning methods benefit the guest and the environment. ª There is no more important area to clean with the least amount of chemicals than the guestroom,º said Mark Hoyle, senior product manager for microfiber cleaning at Rubbermaid Commercial Products, citing microfiber technology in cloths and mops as good options for decreasing chemicals in the room. A microfiber mop reduces chemical use by 95 percent, water use by 90 percent and bacteria existence by up to 98 percent, according to Hoyle. Bacteria and other particles also can be found in the carpet, but high efficiency particulate air filters in vacuums capture 99.97 percent of the particles, according to Andre Motta, senior product manager for carpet care at Rubbermaid. ª The payoff is huge,º Motta said. ª You' re paying just a small [price] difference to make sure that everybody' s healthier. You have healthier employees and healthier guests.º Carpet and other areas trap scents. To cover the odor, hoteliers use air fresheners that often release chemicals into the air, said Jennie Melrod, assistant brand manager at The Dial Corp. ª It is very important to use a product that does not require re-treating of areas. This reduces the amount of particles released into the RUBBERMAID COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS Better breaktimes are on the agenda at The Spa at Four Seasons Las Vegas. It' s necessary to find a product that does the job well the first time. ª The key is not to compromise in performance in order to get environmentally friendly products,º said Craig Monsell, section head for product development at P&G Professional. Lighten up on linen loads Towel reuse programs conserve water, but the laundry room still is an environmental nightmare. Not only is water consumed and energy used to heat the water, but products often use alkalines, acids and phosphates to control water hardness. The chemicals go into the waste system and the municipal waste treatment area, said Craig Monsell, section head for product development at P&G Professional. ª Switch to a laundry system that doesn' t rely on phosphate or alkalinity for cleaning,º he said. Monsell suggests using products with biodegradable ingredients to alleviate harm. Also, products that contain natural-derived cleaning agents, ª in combination with the water savings, make even more of a positive impact on the environment,º said Jennie Melrod, assistant brand manager at The Dial Corp.
