Hotel & Motel Management - May 19, 2008 - (Page 6) Checking In PERSPECTIVE H&MM May 19, 2008 | HotelMotel.com EDITORIAL 600 Superior Ave. East, Suite 1100, Cleveland, OH 44114 So much development to see in Dubai IN THE details Experiencing Dubai Construction, history combine Influx of travelers Tourism boom expected By Stephanie Ricca Managing Editor W e’ve all read stories about Dubai’s tremendous growth, and those of us in the hospitality industry in particular are bombarded with stories from every angle about hotel expansion and resort development in this Middle Eastern region. When I traveled there for the Global Travel & Tourism Summit, I expected a mini Las Vegas, but I was pleasantly sur- prised by what I saw. Dubai is so … new. That’s the best word I can come up with to describe my general feelings after my first, tooshort visit. Construction cranes are everywhere; the emirate is in the midst of constructing an elevated transport system, the world’s tallest skyscraper and the continued development of its man-made residence and resort islands The World, Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira. The rich history of Arabic traditions is everywhere, but a visitor’s first impression— at least this visitor—is one of shiny new buildings, smooth roads and ever-expanding resorts. Dubai isn’t building for nothing. Clearly, demand is there. The emirate is outgrowing its main international airport and a new, larger airport already is under construction to Stephanie Ricca, MANAGING EDITOR . . . . . . . sricca@questex.com Ph: (216) 706-3791 | Fax: (216) 706-3711 Stacey Mieyal Higgins, SENIOR EDITOR . . . . . .shiggins@questex.com Ph: (216) 706-3783 | Fax: (216) 706-3711 Heather Gunter, ASSOCIATE EDITOR . . . . . . . hgunter@questex.com Ph: (216) 706-3792 | Fax: (216) 706-3711 Jason Q. In 2007, the emirate counted 50,306 hotel rooms and the goal is to have 10 million tourists to Dubai by 2010, and 15 million by 2015. Tourism currently accounts for 30 percent of Dubai’s gross domestic product. Being a business traveler in a place where I want to be a tourist sometimes can be frustrating because there simply isn’t enough time to do and see everything I want. But I’m preparing myself for my future as a tourist—I already have a list for my next visit! hmm@questex.com BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Stacy Silver, BUSINESS DEV.
