Hotel & Motel Management - June 2, 2008 - (Page 49) www.HotelMotel.com/digital_edition HotelMotel.com | H&MM June 2, 2008 Hotel Operations BY EMILY HANNA, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR 49 PEST MANAGEMENT Be proactive with pesky pests When faced with a pest problem, hoteliers can attempt to control the environment themselves by sealing holes in the building, eliminating sources of water and cleaning up debris and extra plant growth, which can attract pests such as rats, said Raj Patel, c.e.o. and president of Pest Control Products Depot. “If you do that, you are doing 80 percent of the job from your side and we won’t have to spray as much,” he said. Once the original sweep of the property is made, a professional can come in to spray where necessary. “If you need to use pesticides, [a professional] uses the least-toxic pesticides that will get the job done and applies those in such a way to reduce exposure to people and non-target animals,” said Gordon Morrison, Maxforce market manager for Bayer Environmental Science. There are some do-ityourself products, though, that can ward off the pests until a professional can get to the hotel. “Between the pest control intervals, [employees] are able to have an instant tool to turn the hotel into a pest-free, wonderful experience for the guests,” said Bill Baxter, senior director of marketing and sales at TyraTech.
