One designer’s foresight By Paul J. Heney Editorial Director esign is a large part of our business, even if it isn’t always at the forefront of every employee’s thinking. First impressions being what they are, what does your design say about your property? From the exterior look of your location to the public spaces and the guestrooms, how do you set yourself apart from the competition? It was fascinating to attend my first design event last month, the HD Expo at the Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas. Certainly, design is ubiquitous at a hotel—not just the furniture or flooring that may immediately come to mind, but the fabrics, the lighting, the showerheads, the mirrors, the tile. Not surprisingly, many of the manufacturers were touting the green touches their products featured. Designers, buyers, owners, guests—they all seem to be clamoring for sustainable design elements. It will be interesting to watch over the coming years whether this is simply a drawn-out fad or something more substantial and permanent in nature. Perhaps the highlight of my experience at the show was spending time with Stacy Garcia, a young New York-area designer with a great deal of passion for what she does. It was illuminating to hear her speak about where she gets the inspiration for her patterns—a Tiffany chandelier in a museum, the Paul J. Garcia, a member of the 1,000-member Color Marketing Group, is known for her surprising color combinations and creative patterns. What really impressed me about Garcia (www.stacygarcia. com) was her vision to take her designs beyond the basic tex- tiles into carpeting, wall coverings and accessories. Sure, vision is important in the design world, but it’s also a critical component of all business professionals. Staying at the top of your game means you have to train your vision continually on what you do and how you can keep improving. pheney@questex.com BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Stacy Silver, BUSINESS DEV.
