Hotel & Motel Management - July 7, 2008 - (Page 30) 30 Hotel Operations TRANSPORTATION H&MM July 7, 2008 | HotelMotel.com www.HotelMotel.com/digital_edition BY CHRISTINE BLANK, CONTRIBUTING EDITOR Hotels offer rewards for hybrids, carpools assigned spaces—is offered to those who carpool. “The program started at the end of last year. Now people come early to get spaces,” said Bill Hartwig, v.p., supplier relations and international procurement, Marriott International. In addition, employees who use public transportation are given a subsidy for their commute of up to a maximum of $115 per month, tax-free. The subsidy cannot be given in cash. Instead, Marriott provides tokens or other public transportation payment methods. The Fairmont Sonoma’s “Do Not Drive to Work Day” for employees also has been successful. On the first Wednesday of every month, employees who walk, ride their bike or carpool to work are entered in a drawing for a new mountain bike, which will be given away at the end of the summer. Those who carpool, bike or walk to work are greeted with organic coffee, pastries or some other food at the door, where they can have a look at the bike that they can win. check IN Wyndham Orange County in Costa Mesa, Calif., offers a “Paws and Claws” package in which business and leisure travelers can bring along their four-legged friends. Starting at $139 per night, the package includes pet spa services, treats, a plush pet bed, Sunday brunch with their owners and an optional ground-floor room with direct access to a four-acre lakeside Pet Relaxation Area. The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix has several summer travel packages aimed at specific groups of travelers. One option is the Night Before Flight package, offered to travel-bound guests. Starting at $259 per night, the hotel offers round-trip private town car service between the hotel and airport, valet parking while you’re out of town or a car wash, with your vehicle ready to pick up upon return. Other summer packages are geared toward weekend business travelers, shoppers and food-lovers. InterContinental Tampa, Tampa Bay, Fla., is extending gas rebates to guests until September 2. Tampa Bay’s newest luxury hotel will offer a $40 gas rebate to any guests staying two nights at $149 per night. Fairmont Hotels and Resorts has cooked up new ways to incorporate local, organic food into its hotels. The Fairmont Chicago’s Shop with Chef program allows guests to tour the local produce market with the hotel’s chef. The tour is followed by a cooking demonstration and a gourmet meal. The Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston will arrange a custom-designed cooking class for willing groups that focuses on local, organic ingredients. Compiled by Chris Crowell, ccrowell@questex.com Rewarding guests and employees who drive hybrid cars, carpool or walk to work have been successful green transportation programs at hotels. At most of Fairmont Hotels and Resorts’ California properties, guests can park their hybrid cars or alternativefuel vehicles at the hotels free of charge. Because hotel parking can be as much as $50 per day in cities such as San Francisco, the parking incentive is popular with Fairmont’s guests. “We have people say that they purposely drove their Prius [to San Francisco],” said Michelle Heston, director, public relations, Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa. Kimpton Hotels and Setting up a carpool program Setting up Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa’s “Do Not Drive to Work Day” was very straightforward. Heston suggests: Set up the program with the help of the property’s Green Committee. Notify all employees about the one-day-a-month program via email and with posters around the property. Provide food or something special for employees who participate. Restaurants also provides a 25percent discount on parking at most Kimpton hotels to guests driving hybrid cars. To take the program to the next level, Kimpton executives would like to reward employees who buy a hybrid vehicle between $1,000 and $2,000 each, according to Steve Pinetti, senior v.p., sales and marketing, Kimpton. They are waiting on final approval of the program. Employees at Marriott International’s headquarters in Washington who drive hybrid cars and alternative-fuel vehicles can get preferred, covered parking in 30 spaces near an entrance to the building.
