By Stephanie Ricca EDITOR IN CHIEF NYU panel Continued from page 4 gas pump are going straight to the Middle East.” While Hoplamazian said Hyatt’s focus is on full- and select-service brands, Nassetta said Hilton currently is investing capital and human resources into lifestyle brands. Case in point: The company’s recent hiring of former Starwood Hotels & Resorts NEW YORK–Brand executives looked in the crystal ball at the New York University International Hospitality Industry Investment Conference to predict brand trends five years from now. “There is a generational shift,” said Mark Hoplamazian, president and c.e.o. of Global Hyatt Corp. “There will be more brands three to five years from now. A growing, consuming middle class will exist in India and China, and as that evolves, their needs and wants will need to be served.” “A lot of us are concerned about the economy,” said David Kong, president and c.e.o. of Best Western International. “In the last 30 years, revenue per available room has only declined three times. … We certainly don’t want to be like the airline business, which is one of the most hated industries.” Hilton c.e.o. and president Chris Nassetta identified three mega-trends: “The center of gravity is moving east, brands are becoming much more important and customers are demanding a more customized approach,” he said. “In five years, we’ll have more brands but fewer and stronger global brand companies competing in that space,” he said. Steven Rudnitsky, president and c.e.o. of Wyndham Hotel Group, said “the U.S. will continue to sort its way through this sluggish economy, but the opportunities overseas are endless.” Stevan Porter, president, The Americas for InterContinental Hotels Group, referenced electionyear issues. “We have significant worker shortages across the globe, and we’re not doing enough yet to attract the best and brightest to this industry,” he said. Worldwide’s Ross Klein to lead the company’s luxury and lifestyle brands including Waldorf=Astoria and Conrad Hotels & Resorts. For Best Western, Asia remains a target market. Growing brand presence around the world is one of the company’s top three strategic initiatives, Kong said. “We are particularly proud of what’s happening in Asia. It’s just been phenomenal growth.” Of Best Western’s 4,200 worldwide properties, 1,701 are outside of North America. Seventy-five are in Asia and the Middle East. Rudnitsky said Wyndham is reaching its goals for international growth. “We embarked on an international growth plan in 2004. International once represented roughly 2 percent [of business]. Now it’s 13 percent when you look at rooms and revenue. Our goal is 20 percent,” he said. With its suite of seven brands, Porter said IHG has “placed big bets on human capability and infrastructure in North America, China and the Middle East,” and is in early development in places including Brazil, Russia and India. “China has in place today great infrastructure like railways and airports,” he said. “We think that plays out well for supporting a lot of lodging demand.” In particular, IHG is focusing its growth on the Holiday Inn brand. sricca@questex.com Stop using your vacuum cleaner as CHANGES YOUR VACUUM FROM A BATTERING RAM a battering ram that dents furniture, scratches baseboards, bangs up doors and walls.
