More than 250 mayors from cities all over the United States attended, and GE offered them a sneak peek at one of its latest energy-efficient lighting solutions. GE provided six of its LED StreetDreams luminaries for the event. The new lighting system was installed in the median along Pan American Drive leading up to Miami City Hall. Whirlpool Corp. introduced the Green Touch Program to help make it easier to design, build and market sustainable buildings. The program provides builders with practical solutions to help make a sustainable difference, including sustainable products, design tools and marketing assistance. Thing5, a leading provider of messaging-based software services to the hospitality industry, is leveraging Verizon Business’ industry-leading voice-over-Internet protocol and hosting services to offer voice and messaging services for hotel employees and guests. Milliken & Co. will host its annual food-andbeverage seminar at the company’s Spartanburg, S.C., headquarters Sept. 28–Oct. 1. The F&B forum attracts hotel F&B managers, general managers and catering and banquet managers from around the world to discuss issues facing hospitality managers in their daily operations. Topics include consumer trends in fine dining, textiles 101, the role of leadership, wine and spirits in foodservice establishments, strategic planning and trend analysis, and behavioral styles and creativity. Under an agreement with Verizon Business, Thing5 is providing its hosted platform via a software-as-a-service model to about 1,300 hotels covering more than 275,000 phones. Companies involved include Extended Stay Hotels, La Quinta and LXR Luxury Resorts & Hotels. Wayport announced a new agreement with Taj Hotels LodgeNet Interactive Corp. has partnered with LG Electronics, Philips and Panasonic to provide a more efficient high-definition TV solution for hoteliers by including essential LodgeNet system management technology prebundled with new TVs from participating manufacturers. Under the new programs, these TV manufacturers will deliver HDTVs that are “plug-and-play” and designed to lower total solution cost, enable faster room openings, shorten the time of rooms out of service and enhance total system performance for hoteliers. American of Martinsville, a global manufacturer of casegoods and upholstered seating for the hospitality industry, hired Steve Starkey as regional sales manager, West, and Gina Donahue as architectural & design manager. Hotech Edge, a provider of wireless building management networks, developed and implemented a range of wire-free building security and energy conservation applications for the hospitality industry based on Ember’s ZigBee networking technology. GE LIGHTING SYSTEMS Bosch Security Systems Bosch Security Systems made improvements to its closedcircuit television technical support organization. As part of the changes, Bosch created a dedicated Internet protocol video surveillance team to assist customers with the company’s rapidly growing portfolio of network video products. Hotech Edge’s G-Mesh networks cover entire buildings in a wireless mesh infrastructure for real-time online management of digital guest safes, door locks, climate control and other devices. Hotel Concepts and Brilliant Hotel Software launched RezExchange, a distribution platform for hotel rates, availability, content and reservations. With RezExchange, hotels can manage their global distribution systems, central-reservations systems, ADS and branded website channels straight from the property-management system and will receive all reservations made through these channels directly into their PMS database. Onity appointed Frank Dyer director of product marketing. Before joining Onity, Dyer was a senior product marketing manager for AT&T. Milestone Partners partnered with management to acquire Safemark Systems. Madison Capital Funding LLC and New Canaan Funding provided debt financing and co-invested equity alongside Milestone and management. Telkonet, a provider of centrally managed solutions for integrated energy management, networking, building automation and proactive support services, appointed Jeff Sobieski COO. He formerly was executive VP of energy management. Laura Kirby-Meck joined Multi-Systems as chief marketing officer. Sempa Power Systems developed a heating system called Hybrid Heating that currently is being used in major hotels and resorts in Canada. Hybrid Heating takes the idea behind a hybrid car and applies it to heating systems by offsetting the use of fossil fuels with electricity, depending on which source is least expensive at any given moment. The UK Takeover Panel notified The Manitowoc Co. that Enodis Plc, a manufacturer of foodservice equipment, intends to recommend Manitowoc’s purchase offer. The transaction is valued at about $2.7 billion, including the assumption of Enodis’ net debt. The transaction will be structured as a courtsanctioned scheme of arrangement under the laws of the U.K. and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2008. The transaction is subject to court approval in the U.K., the approval of Enodis shareholders and regulatory approvals in various jurisdictions. THE MANITOWOC CO. BOSCH SECURITY SYSTEMS Resorts and Palaces to provide high-speed Internet access at the three U.S. Taj luxury hotels— The Pierre (New York), Campton Place (San Francisco) and the Taj Boston. Wayport will offer Wi-Fi service in guestrooms, meeting rooms and common areas at each hotel.
