Hotel & Motel Management - August 2008 - (Page 6) Checking In PERSPECTIVE H&MM August 2008 | HotelMotel.com EDITORIAL 600 Superior Ave. East, Suite 1100, Cleveland, OH 44114 Politicians need to find common ground IN THE details Looking at the election Making an informed choice An important summer read Continuing the conversation By Paul J. Heney Editorial Director e take an in-depth look at this fall’s presidential race in this issue, from how hoteliers are handling the upcoming conventions in Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul to what the different candidates’ views would mean for our industry, should they be elected. Our staff had many discussions about exactly how this issue should take shape and what to include. One idea was presenting a staff endorsement of a candidate. That’s normally more in the realm of your local newspaper than in an industry publication, but it is an interesting concept. In the end, we felt it would better serve you to focus on individual topics of importance to hoteliers, W getting insight from different minds within the industry. We hope this allows you to make a more informed choice this November. As you may imagine, politics certainly has been on our minds around here, even more so than normal. I’d like to make one political suggestion for your end-of-summer reading list. I highly recommend “Common Ground: How to Stop the Partisan War that is Destroying America,” a recent book by USA Today columnists Bob Beckel and Cal Thomas. This excellent book, referenced by AAHOA chairman Ashwin “Ash” Patel in his May 19 column, is a must-read for anyone who’s interested in politics. And, I feel, it is particularly necessary for those who feel closely aligned with one of the parties. I’ve joked for years that the two most dangerous people in America are Rush Limbaugh and Michael Moore. Not because of their far-right and far- left beliefs, but because they feed off getting people boiling mad at the other side’s numerous wrongs. They espouse the idea that the other side is not only wrong on issues, but is somehow immoral and evil. This is a far cry from the days when Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill battled over issues and yet could still get together for a drink that evening, realizing that as Americans they agreed on so much more than they differed. My hope for this election cycle is that we can begin to resume a more intellectual debate on the issues, as opposed to the media-driven frenzy on personal minutiae. Both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain seem to be of the character and mindset to follow the higher path. On a personal level, for the first time in a long time, I’d be satisfied with either candi- date. Perhaps that’s a reflection of the men running; maybe it’s influenced by my own desire for common ground. We would like to say a special thank you to the hoteliers who sent in great photos of themselves and their hotels with presidents and candidates alike. Particularly, we’d like to thank Kristin Adderson at Washington, D.C.’s Capital Hilton for her helpful history lessons. We’ll be continuing this election conversation in our new blog, HotelTalk, located at www.hotelmotel. com/hoteltalk. Our editorial staff will be discussing what impact they see this election having on our industry. Some of them may even tell you who they’re voting for, or how their thoughts have changed as a result of their reporting and researching for this issue. And, as always, we welcome your opinions and feedback, both via letter to the editor and comments posted to the blog. Enjoy the issue. pheney@questex.com Paul J.
