Source: Lodging Econometrics Q2 reports: Outlooks weakening By Emily Hanna ASSOCIATE EDITOR INFO CONCIERGE National Report–In the midst of a weakened economy, public hotel companies have announced second quarter earnings results, many of which have decreased. And most, if not all, have scaled back forecasts for the rest of the year to better align with current market conditions. The effects of the economic downturn started to hit in mid-May, so Q2 reports aren’t as harsh as the rest of the year may prove, which is why many companies have dropped back their expectations, said John Arabia, man- Arabia aging director of Green GREEN STREET Street Advisors. “During the second quarter calls, several of the companies materially reduced their outlook for 2008 based on significantly more conservative [revenue per available room] growth numbers and, for the first time in years, negative occupancy,” he said. “The macro-level economic indicators are not supporting a favorable hotel industry climate,” said David Peiken, a spokesman for Choice Hotels International, which reduced its full-year forecast to include a decline in RevPAR of 1.5 percent for the year. “Gas prices See Q2 reports | page 20 Internet booking source breakdown for major hotel brands.
