Hotel & Motel Management - September 1, 2008 - (Page 6) Checking In PERSPECTIVE & LETTERS H&MM September 1, 2008 | HotelMotel.com EDITORIAL 600 Superior Ave. East, Suite 1100, Cleveland, OH 44114 Out of sight, but certainly not out of mind IN THE details Background work critical Back-of-the-house concerns The lowdown on stylebooks Sending our condolences By Paul J. Heney Editorial Director hat you and your staff does behind the scenes is of critical importance to how successfully your hotel operates. The little—and the not so little— issues that arise in back-of-thehouse operations are most often handled out of sight from your guests. They’re probably not even aware of you juggling the front desk schedule at the last minute or finding someone to fill in for the housekeeper who just called in sick. They count W on you to handle the business of running the hotel, so they have a seamless experience from check-in to check-out. It’s in that spirit that I’d like to let you in on a little of the back-of-the-house work that we’ve been doing here at H&MM. Recently, we completed a major update to our stylebook for the magazine. So, what’s a stylebook, you ask? Basically, it’s a key to the particulars of how we write, dealing with everything from the transactions section to breaking news to feature stories. Our stylebook provides us consistency for the publication. It’s based on the commonly used Associated Press stylebook, but we include many lodging-specific entries—issues that arise in our writing that are somewhat unique to our industry. Is bed bug one word or two? (It’s two.) Should condohotel be hyphenated? (Always.) Should we use request for proposal or RFP? (The former; RFP is acceptable on the second reference within a story.) The issues in revising our stylebook may not even be noticeable to you, and it’s likely that only editorial types lose sleep over this kind of thing. Perhaps the one modification that visually affects most of our stories is the change from c.e.o. and other similar titles to the more commonly accepted CEO. Kudos to our associate editor, Emily Hanna, who shepherded us through the much-needed overhauling of our stylebook. I explain all of this because I think it’s important to let you know how much emphasis our editorial team puts on details small and large. We argue about headlines more than any other publication I’ve ever been on, but I love that about this group. We care enough that we want to make it just right for you, the reader—clear, concise, accurate. We’ve also been growing our editorial staff and, as a result, we have a few new fac- es on board. One of the best ways to get to know our entire staff—and to give us feedback on what you like, what you don’t, what you’d like to see more of—is to check out our popular new HotelTalk blog. It has been more successful than any of us expected, and we’d love to have you visit and add your comments. It’s located at www.hotelmotel.com/ HotelTalk. In the meantime, we’ll continue to focus on our back-of-the-house work as diligently as you do on yours. Paul J. Not only do we operate our own condohotel projects, but we are or have been involved as consultants in numerous developments from Florida to Hawaii in both branded (Ritz-Carlton, Hyatt, etc.) and non-branded properties. Our experience with condominium hotels has been quite different than what was primarily featured. For example, even during the current real estate and condominium sales crisis, our most recent project has sold out and is now operating as a very successful condo-hotel property … with very happy unit purchasers. As alluded to in your article, many people did leap into this business not really knowing what they were getting into, and this, unfortunately, is giving the concept an undeserving black eye. The concept itself remains extremely viable when prudently administered. This is a picture of TeleMatrix’s Marquis 9600 DECT Cordless Series telephone. On page 37 of the July 21 issue, editors incorrectly attributed a quote from Jim Anhut, senior VP, franchise development, the Americas, InterContinental Hotels Group [“New brand leaders share hits, misses”]. The correct quote is, “It’s about having a shared mindset rather than a shared age bracket. We brought [Hotel Indigo] closer into the center.” PRESIDENT & CEO—Kerry C.
