The keycard system, which is more widely used outside the U.S., requires that guests insert their room key into a receptacle on the wall near the door. The system works as a master override to the room’s electrical equipment. If no card is inserted when the guest leaves the room, the room powers down to a preprogrammed state (for example, the lights and TV might turn off and any HVAC equipment will revert to a predefined temperature). When the guest returns and the card is reinserted, the equipment will return to its previous settings and the guest will have full control of the room’s systems again. The thermal/motion sensor system works along the same lines. Instead of a keycard to indicate occupancy, however, the system relies on sensors that can be part of a thermostat unit or placed at various locations in the room. One major difference between the two technologies has to do with installation. Keycard systems must be hard-wired to communicate with the room’s components, while thermal/motion detection systems can be either hard-wired or can operate via direct digital control. While in-room EMS cannot be the sole foundation of a strategic approach to energy management, it can make a strong energy program even stronger.
