Or, try leading communityfacing events, such as fundraising for local schools, police and ﬁre departments or parks and beaches in your city. Volunteer to be a guest lecturer at the local community college. You could even offer to be a mentor to students and young professionals entering the hospitality industry. There are scores of young people entering our industry looking for direction and insights. Volunteering will give you a way to serve as a role model for future hospitality leaders. Check into virtual volunteering—something that you can do from home and doesn’t require a huge time commitment. Virtual volunteering can range from participating in association committees to writ- ing and facilitating webinars as educational tools for young professionals. However you decide to volunteer, keep in mind the most successful volunteer experiences are rooted in creating a meaningful opportunity for you to do something you love to do. hmm@questex.com Face Lifts The Wyndham Princeton Forrestal Hotel and Conference Center in Plainsboro, N.J., completed a $7-million renovation that transformed the former Merrill Lynch Conference Center into a state-of-the-art conference facility. The Lexington Hotel O & Suites–French Quarter in New Orleans completed a $2-million renovation of its lobby, common areas and exterior. The project took 18 months. Hyatt Regency Washington will complete a $7-million lobby makeover this fall. The atrium lobby features a contemporary atmosphere, including a staircase, streamlined registration area and redesigned lounge and restaurant. Jason Smith is vice president of communications for HSMAI and spends his volunteer time working with Habitat for Humanity as well as serving as a volunteer judge for hospitality industry award programs. Baltimore Development Corp. opened the Hilton Baltimore Convention Center Hotel in August. The project, led by design ﬁrm Daroff Design Inc. + DDI Architects, offers 60,000 square feet of convention, ballroom and meeting room space and 757 guestrooms. The Holiday Inn Fresno Downtown held a grand opening celebration announcing its $6.5million renovation. Packard Hospitality Group LLC renovated and now manages this 200-room hotel, which features almost 10,000 square feet of event space. Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa completed a $28-million renovation of its 605 guestrooms in the Kealohilani Tower. The interior design by Creative Resource Associates includes granite countertops and wood furnishings.
