An in-room safe (pictured at right) is only to deter an intruder, said Bill Oliver, v. p. of sales and operations at Onity. “They’re not high-security boxes,” he said. “They go through a signiﬁcant amount of testing, but they’re primarily made to keep reasonable valuables safe.” Oliver said safe suppliers work to provide guests with “peace of mind” when leaving their valuables in the room. “It’s all about making it look better and getting the cost down to an affordable level,” he said. “The focus has primarily been to have a dependable box that’s aesthetically pleasing.” One thing that has been evolving is the size of a safe. There is a discrepancy between safe suppliers as to which kind of keypad is best—raised or membranestyle keys. Some like the look of the sleek, ﬂat, membrane keys; while others prefer a more traditional, telephone-style raised keypad.
