Through the annual Restaurant Neighbor Awards, the Washington-based NRA recognizes restaurants and properties that have exceeded expectations in giving back to their local area through outstanding community service. The Roosevelt Hotel in New York City was selected as one of the top properties in the eastern United States and eastern Canada for the annual “Best of the East” award by Meetings East magazine. Nominated and chosen by the magazine’s subscribers and critics—top national meeting planners—the Meetings East’s Best of the East award is given annually to the ﬁnest meeting properties. Planners base their selection on eight criteria: overall attitude of meeting staff; quality of meeting space; availability and quality of guest services; quality of food and beverage service; availability and selection of amenities; assortment of activities; quality of accommodations; and overall value. The WateReuse Assn. presented its 2007 Customer of the Year award to Soﬁtel San Francisco Bay, part of the luxury brand of Accor hotels, during a ceremony that took place at the Tampa (Fla.) Convention Center. The awards ceremony coincided with the 22nd Annual WateReuse Symposium, a conference devoted to water reuse and desalination education. Soﬁtel San Francisco Bay was recognized for becoming the ﬁrst to collaborate with Redwood City, Calif., on its recycled water project. Delta Hotels was awarded the Order of Excellence, the highest distinction conferred by Canada’s National Quality Institute in its Canada Awards for Excellence program. The award recognizes outstanding achievements in quality, customer service and a healthy workplace. The culinary team of Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa, a Wyndham Grand Resort, led by executive chef Pablo Budet, won the silver medal at the 9th Annual Culinary Super Challenge Team Competition in Orlando. Chef Budet and his pupils, Ramón Carrillo, Luís Acevedo and Aníbal Rodríguez, were presented the silver medal by U.S. Food Services during the Florida Restaurant & Lodging Show. The competition requires that each team has ﬁve hours to prepare a fourcourse meal for 60 people—ﬁve American Culinary Federation judges and 55 invitees—under close monitoring by ACFapproved judges.
