There is a growing movement to ensure that hotels are reducing their impact on the environment. If your property is contemplating a green initiative, there are five key areas you will want to consider: water conservation, energy conservation, indoor environmental quality, waste reduction and proper disposal of hazardous materials. Water Conservation Hotels use as much as 100 to 200 gallons of water per occupied room per day. Replacing showerheads with low-flow, high-pressure technology can save several thousand gallons of water per year. Similarly, installing aerators in your faucets and showerheads can reduce the amount of water guests use. Aerators mix air with water to make an effective spray, so guests receive a comfortable, consistent flow while using less water. Using a 1.5 U.S. GPM aerator instead of a 2.2 U.S. GPM aerator results in a more than 30% reduction in water use. Even simple changes such as instituting a linen reuse program at your hotel can save millions of gallons of water per year by encouraging guests to reuse their sheets and towels. you can make to reduce energy consumption is replacing incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Compact fluorescent bulbs use 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs. The environmental impact created by replacing these bulbs is significant. Replacing one incandescent bulb with a compact fluorescent prevents 450 pounds of greenhouse gas from entering the air over the lifetime of the bulb. Another energy-saving solution is to install occupancy sensors and smart PTAC units in guestrooms. These sensory devices automatically shut off heating, cooling and lighting when a room is unoccupied. In-room appliances such as refrigerators, microwaves and TVs are a great way to keep guests comfortable. Appliances with the ENERGY STAR icon consume less energy than products not bearing the logo. TCP, the leader in energy efficient lighting to the hospitality industry, manufactures the most compact fluorescent products in the industry. Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Providing clean rooms and tidy grounds is essential to good business, but few hoteliers stop to consider that what their guests and staff breathe should be just as clean as what they see. Installing air filters with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtration and using vacuums designed to reduce micro-organisms, dust and airborne pollutants can greatly improve IEQ. Janitorial and sanitary supplies, new carpet and paint all help keep your property looking great, but they may also contribute to poor IEQ because they contain Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). These gases can cause short- and long-term adverse health effects. Choosing low-VOC products will improve IEQ and keep guests and employees breathing easier.
