Whether it is recycling or going solar, you will find individuals are taking small steps toward going green. Many workplaces also are incorporating sustainable practices. What about your workplace? M By Ashwin ‘Ash’ Patel H&MM Columnist Introducing green alternatives at your hotels can produce noticeable benefits to your bottom line and the long-term value of your property. This is because the reduction in waste and conservation of resources save money. In addition, attentiveness to green initiatives is sensible, considering an increasing portion of the lodging industry’s audience is actively seeking and demanding sustainable products and services. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade’s Green Operations, there are many easy- to-implement green ideas. Some procedures to put into practice are as follows: Reduce energy at least 50 percent by asking all staff members to turn off computers and other equipment that will not be used after a shift ends. Save paper by encouraging staff members to produce double-sided documents and read materials on computer monitors instead of printing. Considering a single drop of water per second wastes 10,000 liters annually, ask the housekeeping and maintenance departments to be aware of dripping taps. Placing one or two plastic containers filled with stones in toilet reservoirs will displace approximately 4 liters of water per flush—a significant reduction of water use over the course of a year. Instead of purchasing new office furniture, investigate whether existing furniture can be refurbished. Furthermore, exercise good judgment by introducing energy- and water-saving measures whenever possible, including low-flow toilets; energy-management systems; fluorescent bulbs; ceiling fans; and motion sensors for public restrooms, meeting rooms and exercise facilities. You also should consider asking guests to get involved by encouraging them to use bath and bed linens more than once and turn off the lights when they are not in the room. It is important to remember that operating sustainable properties is not just a trend, but rather a path to reducing consequences to our environment. The best part is that by going green, you can save more green, which is music to the ears of many during tough economic times. hmm@questex.com Ashwin “Ash” Patel is 2008 chairman of the Asian American Hotel Owners Assn.
