In June, GMs and owners at each property were instructed to select two people from their property who would attend this event. Those chosen could not hold management positions. Some locations had management vote on whom would attend, while others allowed employees to select. Dawn Ray, director of brand communications for Embassy Suites, said: “People that are in these positions at hotels don’t get a chance to travel for business like general managers. [Here], they’re able to mingle with people from all across the country, to learn how they do things.” EMBASSY SUITES Embassy Suites camp The employees who came were enthusiastic, motivated and boisterous. They were assigned to one of 21 color-coded teams, each led by a corporate employee. Teams spent all three days together bonding, even passing around workbooks for teammates to sign like high school yearbooks. A total of 40 Spanish-speaking attendees also were able to follow the program, thanks to a live translation service and headphones. Jim Holthouser, SVP of brand management, was a hit with attendees, even playing the piano for the crowd during his talk. Holthouser, a classically trained pianist, explained that playing piano in bars was good experience for dealing with people. “I learned that it didn’t take a lot to make a difference … sometimes it is as simple as taking the time to really listen to someone, even if it was just for a couple of minutes,” he said. Holthouser told attendees that Employees broke into teams and assembled bikes that were donated to underprivileged children. Don’t forget your BUSINESS CARDS. In fact, bring a lot of them.
