Hotel & Motel Management - October 20, 2008 - (Page Cover1) ADVERTISEMENT www.HotelMotel.com News Analysis, Trends and People Since 1875 A HotelWorld Network Publication | Vol. 223, No. 18 | October 20, 2008 Save Money by Going Green ustainability is center stage in the hospitality industry. Hotels across the country are initiating green programs, in part because they’re saving money by doing so, and in part because their guests are asking for changes. “It’s important that we act now to save the earth for the future, for our children and our children’s children,” stated Jan Misch, the general manager for the Tuscan Inn, a Best Western property in San Francisco. However, Misch highlights that the genesis for reducing their hotel’s environmental impact is not only social, but also economic. The Tuscan H O S P I TA L I T Y Inn has a comprehensive sustainability program that includes a variety of green business practices including waste reduction, energy efficiency, water conservation and indoor environmental quality. H O S P I TA L I T Y S O L U T I O N S S Inn converted from T12 fluorescent bulbs to the more efficient and longer lasting Philips T8 fluorescent bulbs and installed light sensors. Misch indicated that changes to guest rooms are also a key part of their sustainability initiative. Their efforts include installing ENERGY STAR-rated TVs and energy-efficient air conditioners. “We received a $17,000 rebate from Pacific Gas and Electric when we changed to Amana energy-efficient PTAC units.” GE Zoneline packaged terminal air conditioners and heat pump units offer the highest overall Energy Efficiency Ratings (EER) and Coefficient of Performance (COP) ratings in the industry. Our high Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings mean less outdoor noise penetrating through the unit. MJSI is committed to deliver innovative plumbing products focused on water conservation for both residential and commercial applications. The company’s HydroWorks™ portfolio includes products proven in independent testing to save significant amounts of water. Parkland Plastics was founded on the principles of Building Green by Charles Yoder in 1990. Parkland Plastics is the foremost manufacturer of plastic sheet with 100% recycled content in the USA, with a proprietary process developed over 10 years. Acuity Brands Lighting provides comprehensive lighting solutions with a commitment to innovation and sustainability by pooling the best technology, project management, and customer service from today’s leading lighting brands. Our robust product portfolio includes cost-saving, energy efficient solutions for every hotel lighting application, both inside and out. Water Conservation The property has rolled out several water conservation initiatives including new water-saving showerheads SOLUTIONS and Sloan low-flush and double-flush toilets. Misch indicated they have received significant cost savings from their water conservation programs. “Just from January 1 to May 17, 2008, we saved 1,096,160 gallons of water plus 5,709 natural gas therms for a savings of $8,095.” Waste Reduction Misch and her staff have implemented a variety of ways to reduce the amount of waste entering landfills including separating plastics, bottles, and garbage in guest rooms, the cafeteria, and at the bin level. “We went from 35% to 75% diversion and save up to $3,000 per month due to fewer pickups and less garbage. We pay someone only four hours a day to do the separating,” cited Misch. Indoor Environmental Quality To improve indoor air quality, the Inn only uses paint with low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and has reduced smoking rooms to 12 units out of a total of 221. They also use environmentally friendly cleaning supplies that decrease exposure to toxins for both guests and staff. The Tuscan Inn is a great example of a hotel property that is doing business in a way that is environmentally responsible and economically sound. It’s easy to see why the Tuscan Inn won the United Nations World Environment Day Award in 2005 and the WRAP (Waste Reduction Award Program) Award in 2006. HD Supply is committed to partnering with our customers, like the Tuscan Inn, to provide environmentally preferable product choices to support their sustainability initiatives.
