Freed SENIOR EDITOR BRIEFS The Spa at Norwich Inn has selected ResortSuite integrated propertymanagement software solution to manage its destination spa in the Connecticut woods. The Global Hotel Alliance, an alliance of independent hotel brands, reported an additional 40,000 rooms booked in 2008 over 2007 after switching to Micros’ ORS & MyFidelio products. NEW YORK PALACE HOTEL nformation technology staffs in the hotel sector have shifted their focus from one side of the property to the other. With guest satisfaction still at the forefront, efforts are now being put into improving the Internet experience within the meeting space or conference center. A solid and fast connection in guestrooms is still important, but with today’s hotelier desperate for revenue, satisfying a meeting planner’s Internet needs has become most important. Therefore, many hotels have recently undergone updates or new installations in meeting rooms. At the New York Palace Hotel, a bandwidth upgrade from 1.5 Mbps to 100 Mbps throughout 25 meeting rooms allows the hotel to provide a “guaranteed level of service,” said Jeff Wolf, director of information technology. “We have three events a year that need 3 Megs or higher,” Wolf said. “The old way we used to do it was cumbersome. We’d I The New York Palace Hotel upgraded its bandwidth from 1.5 Mbps to 100 Mbps throughout its 25 meeting rooms. have to bind two separate T1s. Now, if guests ask for five T1s, we give them seven so they’re guaranteed to get the speed.” For Jim DeVore, director of information and technology at the Hamilton Park Hotel and Conference Center in Florham Park, N.J., meeting business drives demand for solid Internet connections throughout the property. Hamilton hosts heavy computer-using groups, sometimes with 300 or more people training on the Web. “We’re seeing a lot more groupware activity with people who may not have made it to the meeting still need[ing] to access a spreadsheet,” DeVore said. Hamilton permanently runs five T1 lines through an Elfiq Link Balancer and can group different amounts of bandwidth to sell to clients. In addition, the balancer allows for meeting groups to bring in additional T1s of their own if they need more bandwidth. “I can actually add that bandwidth to our collection and separate it out for only them to use,” DeVore said. The Chaminade Resort & Spa in Santa Cruz, Calif., launched its new website, www.chaminade.com, redesigned to reflect the resort’s recent $15-million renovation. Visitors will be able to book reservations, view photographs of the property and learn more about special events. The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa (Hawaii) is upgraded its energymanagement system with ecoMODE from Inncom. The ecoMODE’s green button activates the thermostat’s energy-saving mode and green programs. Compiled by Jason Q.
