Hotel & Motel Management - February 2009 - (Page 40) H&MM February 2009 | HotelWorldNetwork.com 40 News & Analysis INDUSTRY COVERAGE “This industry has a very diverse job bank.” JOE MCINERNEY, AH&LA Millennials Continued from page 1 Baby boomers are defined as people born between 1946 and 1964, and Generation X-ers are considered those born between about 1965 and 1979, but start and end years of generations vary. There currently are about 76 million baby boomers in the workforce, which is the equivalent of how many millennials—those born between about 1980 and 2000—eventually will be working, according to Alan Keith, VP of 20/20 Assessment, an Inter- net-based human resources assessment tool for the hospitalityservice industry. Keith and Bruce Lee, president of training company Encore Seven, presented a webinar titled “Working with Generation Y Employees.” The hotel industry faces an excess of empty positions. “We’re going to need 300,000 people— and that’s with limited growth— between now and 2014,” said Joe McInerney, president and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Assn. “That’s the United States. If you take a look at a place like Dubai, in the next 10 years, they’re going to need 100,000 employees. … This is a world problem, an employment problem.” Rules of attraction Getting the large numbers of millennials necessary to fill baby boomers’ jobs will be difficult but not impossible, McInerney said. He hopes to show this generation opportunities in the hospitality industry beyond front desk and housekeeping positions. “This isn’t a one-trick pony,” he said. “We’ve got about 200 categories people can fit into.” Ken Greger, CEO and managing director of Greger/Peterson Associates, said education must start early with partnerships in high school and, especially, college. During the webinar, Keith said employers also need to show employees there are opportunities to move up within the company. “They’re ambitious,” he said. “You’ve got to speak to possibilities.” Additionally, “It is about ‘show me the money,’” Keith said. “To win over this generation and gain their support … you need to draw a clear line between performance and the potential reward.” Greger said many recent college graduates have student loans, so they may work in another field to pay off bills despite wanting to be in hospitality. To combat this, Greger suggested a student-loan reimbursement program in which a company pays for a portion of the employee’s loan after he or she has worked for at least one year. But this information can’t be a false promise to get them hired, said Leo Campbell, manager of education and career development for Loews Hotels. “[Companies must] be very upfront with what they offer when they’re trying to recruit millennials because they will hold you accountable for what you say,” he said. ehanna@questex.com More Than Ever You Need Information and Insight To Chart Your Course.
