Hotel & Motel Management - February 2009 - (Page 46) H&MM February 2009 | HotelWorldNetwork.com 46 Checking Out LODGING’S LIGHTER SIDE “When you spend a lifetime in an industry, it’s in your blood.” ERIC DANZIGER, PRESIDENT AND CEO, WYNDHAM HOTEL GROUP JUST LISTED THE PEABODY MEMPHIS Predicted travel trends in ’09 An OTA will change hands: The space for online travel agencies is crowded and a downturn in travel spending will force a major OTA to change ownership. Luxury brands feel the pinch: More affluent consumers will see their net worth dwindle and therefore spend less on travel. TEAM PHOTOGENIC New home for mighty mallards The Peabody Memphis opened an exclusive suite on its rooftop with a granite sun deck, a swimming pool with a bronze sculpture of splashing ducks and views of the Mississippi River. The suite isn’t for guests—it’s the new home of the hotel’s resident Peabody Ducks. For the 75th anniversary of The Peabody Ducks, the hotel unveiled a 288-square-foot Duck Palace. The $200,000 palace features a 24-foot glass viewing panel and a sloped metal roof. Donations turn everyday people into superheroes The Sheraton Seattle held the 16th Annual Gingerbread Village, with visitors raising more than $40,000 for the Northwest Chapter of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Seven of Seattle’s top architecture firms and trade associations—Callison Architecture, DLR Group, KMD Architects, Mithun Architects, MulavannyG2 Architecture, MasterBuilders Assn. and 4D Architecture—teamed up with the hotel’s culinary staff to design, bake and build creations for the theme: “A Superhero Holiday.” Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Spiderman led children through the village during a surprise superhero visit. Venture capital stands aside: Corporations will lead investment activity. Also, smaller firms with less access to capital and fewer strategic alternatives will fail. U.S. airlines survive: Reductions in capacity and lower fuel prices will help airlines perform better than expected. Hotel industry hit late: The global hotel industry will manage this downturn better than 2002-03 but will feel the full brunt in late 2009. Online advertising and media see growth: The current economic weakness has had no effect on online media properties, which continue to see unabated growth in their online visitors. The real advent of mobile computing: Two mobile computing platforms (the iPhone and BlackBerry Storm) will make mobile travel applications prevalent.
