The Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai has reopened with new security measures, and officials promised a new type of luxury hotel: An “invisible fortress” that can protect guests as well as pamper them. I have written about terrorism in our industry in this magazine twice before, and very little, if any, meaningful progress has been made. After the Mumbai attacks, prominent industry leaders said improved security measures are needed immediately. But at the same time, they noted that hotels are quasi-public buildings, and also that the nature of the hotel business is to be open and welcoming, which thereby impedes effective security measures. The lessons of Mumbai, as well as other terrorist actions at hotels, prove that business should not continue as usual. Implementing programs on how to handle terrorist attacks at a hotel could mean fewer instances, resulting in fewer injuries and deaths. This is not a pleasant subject to write about, but the hotel industry has waited too long to properly focus on this critical issue.
