Heney EDITORIAL DIRECTOR he Hotel Group, which is coming into its 25th year, is enduring with a portfolio of stable properties. T “Our mantra this year is staying power,” said Doug Dreher, president of The Hotel Group. “Obviously, we’re in very challenging times. We’re trying to navigate through it and be as nimble and efficient as we can.” From a revenue standpoint, the numbers coming in for the company are only half as bad as much of the industry, Dreher said, so he is confident THG can ride out the recession. “Most critically, I think we have a really good team—both corporately and in the field,” Dreher said. What’s the mix of business versus leisure?” Dreher’s team also looks highly upon guest satisfaction. “If you get [customer service] right, you’ve got the bottom line … find and retain satisfied guests. Those values carry us through.” The company, which employs more than 1,300 people, owns Dreher THE HOTEL GROUP and/or manages 25 full-service and select-service properties in nine states, stretching from Alaska to Tennessee. THG currently operates 12 brands and two independent hotels. THG has two properties under construction, and Dreher thinks three or four could get out of the ground in 2009. Dreher said that with about 25 hotels, the company is at its “sweet spot” and they don’t aspire to jump to, say, 50 properties at this point. “Our properties are fresh and clean and most of them have power brands, so we’re pretty well poised,” he said. Dreher said it’s the customer service that holds the whole company together. “We have all the different brands, but our service vision is what binds us all together,” he said. Dreher explained that their human resources team goes out to each property with a program called “Roll out hospitality greatness.” A gold winner is selected form each property—the person who most exudes hospitality greatness. That employee is flown out to THG’s annual general manager conference for an award ceremony. “It makes a profound difference,” Dreher said. pheney@questex.com CIRCLE NO. 109 http://www.HotelWorldNetwork.com
