Lucrative film and TV franchises not only establish the grounds for huge box office potential, but also build substantial fan bases and set new standards for entertainment. Over the past few months, we conducted a fan survey in three rounds that divided different franchises by category, with the top vote-getters moving on to the next round. Breaking down the votes among the top four criteria, three different franchises topped the categories. “Star Wars” was top among voters for Perceived Influence on Culture as well as Entertainment Value. Overall Quality went to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” while How It Holds Up went to “Superman.” “Star Wars” finished a close second in both categories. The top choice among those who selected Other in the criteria question was some variation of “the strength of the fan base.” And the fans were nothing if not vocal about their favorites. We also asked if they were regular readers of an assortment of fan sites that may have picked up our poll. Fans of “Stargate” checked in from a number of sources, including Gateworld.net and the “Stargate” MySpace page, while supporters of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and its spinoffs mounted campaigns through Whedonesque.com and, of all places, the IMDb.com message boards. TheDigitalBits.com readers also made a showing, expressing a preference for “Star Wars.” Among fans who identified themselves as TVShowsOnDVD.com readers, the top selection was “Star Trek” at 29.8%, followed by “Star Wars” at 16.9% and the Buffyverse at 15.7%.
