The character has dominated film, TV, animation and home video almost from his debut in 1939. Two film serials in the 1940s proved Batman would work in liveaction and made the character a household name for many who had never read a comic book. The 1960s series starring Adam West exposed the humorous nature of the character, spoofing his extremes while remaining loyal to the brand. While the movie that stemmed from this series is readily available on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, the show itself is not. If ever it were released on DVD, it likely would be an instant best-seller. Tim Burton’s much darker 1989 film introduced the character to a new generation of fans. While that film series eventually sputtered with 1997’s Batman and Robin, 2005’s Batman Begins re-energized the franchise, and the buzz around this year’s sequel, The Dark Knight, is huge. Not to be outdone is the character’s legacy in animation, from “Super Friends” to “Batman the Animated Series.” No other superhero can claim a legacy as rich or a home entertainment library as vast. – JOHN LATCHEM 12 AGENTDVD JULY 2008 AgentDVD.com http://AgentDVD.com http://agentdvd.com
