After slowly draining its fan base for the past 10 years, it comes as little surprise that “Star Trek” would be usurped by Joss Whedon’s upstart Buffyverse, which consists of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and its spinoff, “Angel.” That “Buffy” demonstrated more-recent success is borne out in the reaction of the fan sites to voting. Sites such as Whedonesque.com rallied legions of fans to the cause, while the Trek fan sites generated little relative support for their central franchise. Another factor for the success of “Buffy” here is a tendency for the splitting of “Trek” votes among the sci-fi and TV categories (see page 24). Of those voting for “Trek” as the best sci-fi franchise, only 32.2% picked it as the best TV franchise, with a majority of the remaining votes divided among “Buffy” and “Stargate.” Had these voters gone with “Trek” down the line, it would have won the TV category. (This assumes its votes in the sci-fi category didn’t come from “Buffy” or “Stargate” fans.) However, it’s hard to argue against “Trek” as the greatest franchise on TV, with five live-action series (704 episodes), an animated series and 10 films, all stemming from Gene Roddenberry’s original and influential vision that debuted in 1966. – JOHN LATCHEM 32 AGENTDVD JULY 2008 AgentDVD.com http://AgentDVD.com http://Whedonesque.com http://agentdvd.com
