While a closer examination does confirm that the “Jaws” vote total was pumped up by fans of those other franchises, “Jaws” still finished first among those who did not vote for either “Star Wars” or “Indiana Jones.” With all due respect to the fans, a single film does not an all-time great franchise make. And while the original Jaws from 1975 is an all-time classic, the other three films in the series are not only disappointing, but Jaws 3-D (1983) and Jaws: The Revenge (1987) are among the worst films ever. The “Halloween” films, on the other hand, have been consistently scary for 30 years. The original “Halloween” in 1978 was the scariest thing I had ever seen. To this day I consider it the ultimate horror movie, with a murderous backstory told in horrific flashback form, a realistic modern-day setting and a villain who is clearly real and believable. True, later films in the franchise cast a more supernatural aura around Michael Myers, but it never gets as outlandish as, say, the “Friday the 13th” series, which had poor Jason Voorhees seeping into the Hudson River and then catapulting into outer space. – THOMAS K.
