It is nice my 44 AGENTDVD JULY 2008 H films are appreciated by young people.” Young or old, fan or not, it’s hard to deny Argento’s staying power. This year marks the DVD release of Mother of Tears, the long-awaited final film in his “Three Mothers Trilogy,” which began more than 30 years ago with Suspiria (1977), followed in 1980 by Inferno. “It is very strong, and some moments are very special,” says Argento. Argento has been described by some as the most censored auteur in cinema history, and he says for that reason he enjoys seeing his films on DVD. “My films are much better on DVD [because] they are not censored,” he says, and fans are able to see his complete vision for the film. He says he is happy with the recent Dario Argento Box Set because it includes uncut and uncensored versions of some of his favorite films: Tenebre, Phenomena, Trauma, The Card Player and Do You Like Hitchcock? Phenomena (1985), Argento says, provided a great experience working with Jennifer Connelly, who he describes as a “magnificent creature,” and Trauma (1993) is especially meaningful because it is the first film he worked on with his daughter, Asia Argento. Appreciating freedom in filmmaking is a running theme with Argento, from his beginnings as a film critic (which he credits with developing his vision), to mainstream projects such as Showtime’s “Masters of Horror” series. When he got the call to do “Masters of Horror,” he says he was ecstatic. “They said, ‘We won’t [censor] you,’ … That was the first time in my life people said these words to me.” Argento directed the season-one episode “Jenifer” and season two’s “Pelts.” AgentDVD.com http://agentdvd.com
