Christian Entertainment Review - July 2008 - (Page CER-16) THE LIST >> Available Now, Fox Faith, Drama, $26.98 DVD, ‘PG.’ Stars Malcolm McDowell, Chuck Carrington, Hilarie Burton. T he List is based on a novel by best-selling Christian fiction author Robert Whitlow. Readers familiar with the Christian fiction of Frank Peretti might sense some similarities — unfortunately, not with the same hair-raising, heart-pounding experiences. The title refers to “The Covenant List of South Carolina” — a financial agreement enacted in 1863 by 11 Southern plantation owners. Swearing a blood oath, they shipped hoards of gold out of the country so their heirs would be rich in perpetuity. If absolute power corrupts absolutely, then unimaginable wealth corrupts unimaginably. HEBREWS 11:24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. The leader of the group, Mr. LaRochette (McDowell), not only holds financial control over the group, but he also dominates it psychologically and spiritually. Several times he uses an evil power to inflict illness and pain on his enemies. Into this group walks the innocent but shallow Renny Jacobson (Carrington), who inherited his right to The List upon the death of his estranged father. As the movie progresses LaRochette’s power over Renny increases. But a greater power is at work — the power of Christ to change an arrogant, superficial heart. While Renny finds the power of evil exhilarating, he discovers that the power of Christ’s gracious, forgiving love is eternally enlivening. While not a must-see film, The List does dramatically portray every person’s responsibility to choose sides in the battle against good and evil. And it leaves the audience with the message that “God’s children and His enemies both make the same mistake — they underestimate the power of prayer.” – Robert W. Kellemen, Ph.D. Christian rating: Entertainment rating: ## ACADEMY AWARD® NOMINEE DIANE LADD GRAHAM GREENE ACADEMY AWARD® NOMINEE GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINEE LEE MAJORS "A wonderful family film.
