Home Media Magazine - Christian Entertainment Report - Fall 2008 - (Page 8) ptc ABOUT THE PARENTS TELEVISION COUNCIL he Parents Television Council is a non-profit educational organization advocating responsibility in entertainment. Since 1995, the Parents Television Council has been at the forefront of the national effort to restore decency to the entertainment industry. Now more than 1.3 million members strong, the PTC has gained worldwide recognition as America’s largest and most influential media watchdog organization. More than fifty years worth of research and over one thousand scientific studies have proven that children are strongly influenced by what they see on television, in the movies and in video games. Yet in spite of the overwhelming evidence of the negative effects of offensive programming, the entertainment industry continues to produce and aggressively market sexually explicit, violent and vulgar entertainment products to children; and they do so all the while insisting that they bear no responsibility for the destructive behaviors those products inspire in impressionable youngsters. While the PTC believes that parents have the greatest responsibility when it comes to monitoring the television viewing habits of their children, the entertainment industry and the advertising community also must take responsibility for the vital role they play in shaping America’s culture. The PTC works to encourage responsible behavior on the part of those who both produce and sponsor entertainment programming on television. With its prestigious award, the PTC Seal of Approval™, the Parents Television Council recognizes excellence in television and film, and responsible advertising practices by T those corporations which sponsor television programming. Among the television programs which have received the PTC Seal of Approval™ have been Disney Channel favorites like High School Musical, Cheetah Girls, That’s So Raven, The Suite Life of Zach and Cody, Cory In the House and Camp Rock. The PTC has also honored such family-friendly mainstream series as American Idol, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, Everybody Loves Raymond, Touched By an Angel, 7th Heaven, Sue Thomas FBEye, and dozens of others. The PTC also awards the PTC Seal of Approval™ to companies that use their advertising budgets responsibly by choosing to sponsor family-friendly television programming. Recipients for excellence in advertising have included Camp Rock Procter & Gamble, General Mills, Coca-Cola and Johnson & Johnson. In addition, the PTC annually publishes a list of the Top Ten Best and Worst Advertisers, which gives additional prominence to those companies which make responsible sponsorship decisions. The PTC also selects for its Integrity in Entertainment Award those corporations and individuals who have demonstrated a longstanding commitment to creating, distributing, and sponsoring quality programs and products which promote positive messages in entertainment. Recipients of this award have included the Hallmark Channel, which represents the best in television and provides family-friendly programming appropriate for all ages; the J.M. Smucker Company, which bears a history of sponsoring television shows which the entire family can enjoy; and singer, actor and show business icon Pat Boone, whose entire life and career have displayed a constant and unwavering passion for decency in entertainment. Through its research, publications and website (www.parentstv.org); by recruiting and mobilizing a grassroots army of activists; and by educating the advertising community, Hollywood and public policy leaders, the PTC encourages the entertainment industry to develop wholesome quality entertainment that the entire family can enjoy. Finally, the PTC seeks to remind the American public of the need for television to return to its roots as a socially responsible medium – because our children are watching. Parents Television Council is pleased to partner with Family Entertainment Central by providing comprehensive reviews and analysis of television programs from a values-centered perspective. 8 CHRISTIAN ENTERTAINMENT REVIEW — SPECIAL EDITION / FALL 2008 http://www.parentstv.org http://www.parentstv.org
