On that same day of Feb. 11, Best Buy issued its own media release stating that the consumer electronics chain would showcase and recommend Blu-ray product beginning in March (though the company stopped short of saying it would abandon HD DVD). Of course, Warner Home Video fired the biggest salvo on the eve of CES in early January when the studio announced it was defecting from HD DVD and going Blu-ray exclusively by mid-year. Toshiba’s Feb. 19 announcement blamed “recent market developments” for leading the company to abandon HD DVD. Regardless of which retailer or studio is credited with being responsible for the demise of HD DVD, the fact that many are so anxious to be seen in that light is indication that all retailers and studios are now solidly behind Blu-ray. That has also quickly become more obvious to store customers as retailers announce and implement new strategies.
