Arnold wo New Year’s Day releases, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Resident Evil: Extinction and Lionsgate’s War, topped the national DVD sales and rental charts the week ended Jan. 6. Resident Evil came out on top of the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, riding on its $50.7 million theatrical record. War came in at No. 2 but topped Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart with estimated rental earnings of $11.8 million, or more than half its $22.5 million box office take. Resident Evil generated an estimated $8.3 million in rental stores for a fifth-place bow. A third newcomer, New Line Home Entertainment’s Shoot ’Em Up, debuted at No. 4 on the sales chart, right behind Warner Home Video’s T Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which jumped up a notch the first week of the new year — and its fourth week in stores. Shoot ’Em Up, which made just $12.8 million theatrically, debuted at No. 8 on the rental chart, but its estimated rental earnings of $7.7 million still amount to 60% of its entire theatrical gross. The previous week’s top seller, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s The Simpsons Movie, slipped to No. 8 its third week in stores. Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s The Kingdom and New Line’s Rush Hour 3, both released just before and after Christmas, finished at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. On the rental chart, Rush Hour 3 came in at No. 2, with $11.1 million in revenue, while The Kingdom was No. 3, with $10.5 million.
