Ltd. apparently decided there was a burgeoning market of consumers who like to sit in the front row at movie theaters. As opening keynote speaker Jan. 7 at International CES 2008 in Las Vegas, Toshihiro Sakamoto, president of Panasonic AVC Networks Company, unveiled for the first time a 150-inch advanced high-definition plasma HDTV, the world’s largest. With four times the resolution of I PANASONIC BOWS IPTVS Panasonic announced a new flagship series of IP-enabled plasma TVs at CES. The player offers 1080p playback, lossless audio, picturein-picture compatibility and BD-Live. BD-Live lets users download images and subtitles and join multiplayer interactive games linked to extras. The DMP-BD50 also includes an SD memory card slot for transferring images from a camera and employs Viera Link, which lets users operate specially equipped home theater components with a single remote. – John Latchem L AS VEGAS — Samsung Electronics Co. will continue selling its dual-format HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc player (BDUP5000), despite the apparent mortal hit levied by Warner Bros. against HD DVD. During a product press conference at CES, a Samsung spokesperson said the company was surprised by Warner’s decision to exclusively support Blu-ray and will continue producing the player if market demand warranted. “There are still a number of companies involved and will continue to support HD DVD,” said Kevin Morrow, marketing director of Samsung’s HD players. Samsung — a member of both the Blu-ray Disc Association and HD DVD Promotional Group — markets two Blu-ray players, the BD-P1400 and BD-P2400. It does not sell an HD DVD player. Morrow said 30% of studios still support HD DVD (Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks). The PC market with installed HD DVD drives is far greater than the market for HD players, he said, and as such HD DVD cannot be ignored. Morrow said consumers who bought HD DVD movies should still be able to buy HD DVD compatible players. “If consumers still want to buy it, we will continue to produce it,” Morrow said. BRIEFS I SAMSUNG BOWS 3-D TELEVISION LINE Samsung Electronics Co. in late March will offer two plasma HDTV models capable of broadcasting 3-D content. The 450 series of HDTV, which has not yet been priced for the U.S. market, represents the company’s belief that there’s a growing market for 3-D movies and, to a larger extent, video games, according to Charles Park, executive of the PDP TV division. The TVs — available in 42-inch and 50-inch screens — includes required 3-D glasses and software that must be run through a connected PC. “There are almost 100 video games and 10 movies on DVD in 3-D available in the U.S.,” Park said. “We will be ready when consumers see more 3-D content available in the market.” – Erik Gruenwedel I HD VMD PLAYER COMES WITH TWO FILMS London-based New Medium Enterprises’ HD VMD players, which have been shipping to the United States since December at a price of $199, now include two free movies, Mother Ghost and Cutting Room. HD VMD is a third high-def format that does not have any major studio support.
