Home Media Magazine - January 20-26, 2008 - (Page 13) www.homemediamagazine.com Edited by John Latchem TV DVD ‘Lonesome Dove’ Saga Concludes on DVD By John Latchem bout a month after airing on TV, the CBS Western miniseries Comanche Moon is coming to DVD Feb. 26 in an extended cut from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. “We have had a great run with the release of these types of high-profile televised events, including Broken Trail and The Company,” said Bob Oswaks, EVP of marketing for Sony Pictures Television. “Both received a great amount of critical acclaim and commercial success, and so we’re really optimistic about how Comanche Moon will perform on DVD.” The miniseries, based on a 1997 novel by Larry McMurtry, represents the second chapter in the “Lonesome Dove” saga, which was written out of order. Comanche Moon serves as a prequel to Lonesome Dove, McMurtry’s 1985 book that became an acclaimed miniseries in 1989, but it takes place after Dead Man’s Walk, a 1995 novel adapted for TV in 1996. Comanche Moon was the final novel McMurtry wrote A for the saga. The story follows two Texas Rangers struggling to preserve the Western frontier while battling tension at home. The latest miniseries stars Val Kilmer, Steve Zahn, Rachel Griffiths, Karl Urban, Linda Cardellini and Wes Studi. The twoDVD set will retail for $29.95 and includes three featurettes: a making-of special, a program about the heritage of the Comanche tribe, and a look at the cast’s cowboy and riding training. “Comanche Moon had the largest audience for any movie on any network in more than two years for its first night,” Oswaks said. “With the impressive cast and great writing, we expect the same success on DVD.” Dead Man’s Walk, Lonesome Dove, the 1993 miniseries Return to Lonesome Dove and the 1995 follow-up Streets of Laredo (based on McMurtry’s 1993 sequel to the original novel) are all on DVD from Lionsgate.
