Lionsgate will release the two-disc title April 1 (prebook March 5) at $19.98. The title showcases exercises designed by Tommy Sheehan, Kovalev’s personal trainer. The exercises were shot using 24 HD cameras, giving viewers the option to see Kovalev’s moves from multiple angles. “I work with rubber bands, no dumbbells or weights,” Kovalev explained, saying the rubber bands cause less stress on the body. “[These exercises] can work for any athlete because most of them involve the upper body, core and legs.” Kovalev’s on-ice exercises include the hockey and training drills that helped make him a star, current- L ly playing for the Montreal Canadiens. To that end, the DVD has both English and French subtitles. The DVD includes a making-of featurette, a mini documentary called “Mr. Kovi,” and information on the Gift of Life Foundation, which helps children in need of cardiac surgery. Kovalev himself suffered from a heart ailment as a child and has arranged for the DVD’s sales profits to go to the foundation. “The experience definitely is not something I want any kid to experience,” Kovalev said. “As a little kid, doctors wouldn’t let me skate, except for maybe 20 minutes of easy skating, once a week.” The DVD’s documentary was filmed in Kovalev’s native Russia while he was traveling and doing charity work. Kovalev said it’s about 45 minutes long, although he said another 90 minutes of leftover footage could make for another DVD later. leases Step-by-Step Tai Chi With Tiffany Chen (DVD $19.99). Some of Gaiam’s popular fitness franchises include “The Firm” and “Billy Blanks.” Lionsgate nudged up to No. 2, from its third-place ranking the previous year., and had the No. 1 title of the year with Dancing With the Stars: Cardio Dance. That along with the “The Biggest Loser” workouts, Denise Austin and the addition of Kathy Smith gave the mini-major its best year to date, said Kajsa Vikman, Lionsgate’s VP of marketing. Anchor Bay Entertainment finished again in the top three, close behind Lionsgate. “Our fitness sales for 2007 were up over 40% vs. 2006, so we are quite happy,” said Julie Cartwright, VP of brand marketing for Anchor Bay, who noted that some large retailers — such as Wal-Mart — aren’t included in Nielsen numbers. Vivendi Visual Entertainment lept from ninth place in 2006 to No. 4 in 2007 — a ranking based on its distribution of Bodywisdom Media’s products.
