The report by ComScore, a Reston, Va.-based research firm, found that light online video watchers, who account for 50% of the market, average six minutes of video a week. “The usage differences are reminiscent of the early days of the Internet,” said Jarvis Mak, VP of research and insight at ComScore. The top video site among the three user groups was YouTube, with 54% market penetration globally. Moderate video viewers tended to opt for broadcast TV sites, including ABC, CBS, Scripps TV and CMT. Light online viewers tended to watch more TV (13 hours per week) than moderate and heavy viewers. www.homemediamagazine.com I VOD IS STILL RELATIVELY UNKNOWN TO CONSUMERS I I’ve used VOD myself 15% I I have heard of it, but I don’t know what it is 16% I I know what it is, but I’ve never seen VOD 16% Source: Forrester Research Inc. 2007 BRIEFS I STUDY: ITUNES VIDEO, APPLE TV APPEAL LIMITED Just 19% of iTunes users bought video content accounting for about $100 million ($30 each) in first-half 2007 video revenue, according to Forrester Research Inc. Forrester said increased use of the DVR, broadband Internet access, a dearth of hit movies and denied access to user-generated video hampered iTunes video sales. Also, the study said 55% of online adults had never heard of Apple TV; 26% were unfamiliar with its features and 4% said they would seek further information. – Erik Gruenwedel I I’ve never heard of it 31% I ‘IDOL’ ON ITUNES Fox Broadcasting Co., Fox Interactive Media, 19 Entertainment, FremantleMedia and Apple Inc. have partnered to make performances from the seventh season of “American Idol” available on iTunes. Music performances are available for 99 cents a song, and a video with all 12 finalist performances will be available for $1.99, starting March 11. – Billy Gil I I’ve seen VOD but never used it myself 22% Report: Lukewarm Interest in VOD By Erik Gruenwedel RESEARCH Consumer interest in video-on-demand (VOD) apparently is tepid despite aggressive efforts by cable operators and studios to jumpstart the distribution channel. A new study from Forrester Research Inc. found the number of cable households using VOD in 2007 increased just 2%, to 15% of the total, and the format generated a paltry 3% of total weekly minutes viewed. By comparison, 64% of weekly view- I NIELSEN: MINORITY HOMES NOT DIGITAL-READY About 13 million largely Latino households have one or more TVs unready for the 2009 digital conversion, says a new study. The Nielsen Co. found that 26.2% of Latino households have at least one TV set unable to receive a digital signal, including 17.3% of households completely unprepared. Black households followed with 19.5% owning at least one non-digital TV, including 12.4% with just analog-enabled sets. About 18.8% of Asian households have at least one noncompliant TV and 11.7% have only noncompliant TVs. White households had 15.2% partially non-compliant and 8.8% totally analog. – Erik Gruenwedel ing favored broadcast TV, and 21% opted for rental and sellthrough DVD. Led by Comcast Communications and Time Warner Cable, cable operators together with major studios — notably Warner Bros. — have been testing same-day VOD and DVD new movie releases in Denver and Pittsburgh.
