ABC will provide its programming to any satellite, cable or telephone system operator’s on-demand service, if they agree to show the ad-supported shows without allowing customers to use the fast-forwarding features available on most digital video recorders. “We remain focused on our consumers and finding innovative ways BRIEFS I CBS GROWING ONLINE CBS Corp. earned $286.2 million during the fourth quarter (which ended Dec. 31), down more than 14% compared to the previous Q4 ($335 million). Revenue totaled nearly $3.8 billion for Q4, and for the year the company earned $1.25 billion, compared to more than $1.6 billion in 2006. Still, CBS executives are upbeat about 2008, mostly due to an influx of new media avenues for the company’s content. The CBS Audience Network has more than 300 affiliated Web sites, and the company says CBS is the No. 1 provider of online programming among all TV operators, with more than 190 million unique visitors. CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves said CBS Paramount Network Television and CBS Television Distribution have more online outlets than ever. – Chris Tribbey W to make our content more widely available to them, and we believe that this can be achieved by continuing to evolve the ways we work with our distribution and advertising partners,” said Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of the Disney-ABC Television Group. The number of commercials that accompany shows is still being determined. However, it will be fewer than seen during a live broadcast, according to the agreement. Broadcast affiliates also will have the op- portunity to include one locally sold, 30-second commercial during the broadcast. The agreement also leaves open repurposing opportunities for ABC programming on iTunes and Xbox Live’s Marketplace. ABC and cable operator Cox Communications tested the concept in Orange County, Calif., over a period of several months. The companies found that 93% of users reported no qualms with the advertising if it meant automatic and free access to ABC shows.
