That’s because three quarters of people who watched the Oscar telecast had not seen any of the nominated movies, according to Integrated Media Measurement Inc., a San Mateo, Calif.-based data research firm. Among IMMI panelists in six major metropolitan areas that watched the Oscars, 15.3% saw Juno, 8.2% watched No Country for Old Men, 4.1% saw Atonement; 3.9% watched Michael Clayton and 3.8% viewed There Will Be Blood. No Country For Old Men won the best picture Oscar, with brothers Ethan and Joel Coen winning best director and Javier Bardem garnering the best male supporting actor award. “The 75% who watched the telecast but haven’t yet seen any of the films represents a tremendous potential DVD and PPV for the nominated pictures,” said Amanda Welsh, head of research for IMMI. Among the best picture nominees, 56% of panelists who watched No Country for Old Men watched the Oscars, followed by 51% for Atonement, 44% for There Will Be Blood, 41% for Juno and 35% for Michael Clayton. The Best Buy in Costa Mesa, Calif., had a huge display for New Frontier, offering the two-disc special edition with a pack-on Green Lantern figurine. The chain also offered single-disc compilations of previous “Superman” and “Justice League” DVDs for $4.99 each. Meanwhile, the Target in nearby Santa Ana barely called attention to New Frontier, and offered no copies of the two-DVD special edition. However, Target does offer an exclusive New Frontier downloadable copy with purchase of the DVD. Circuit City offered a collectible Green Lantern patch, the first of three in Circuit City’s exclusive superhero series. Best Buy also tied in with Beowulf a $6.99 collection of fantasy and medieval adventure films. Also, as far as exclusives go, it seems most are available only with the standard-DVD version and not the high-def equivalent. 6 Home Media Magazine March 2–8, 2008 http://www.homemediamagazine.com http://Amazon.com
