Home Media Magazine - March 16-22, 2008 - (Page 13) www.homemediamagazine.com ELECTRONIC DELIVERY BRIEFS I WARNER HAS DIGITAL ‘DREW’ Warner Bros. Digital Distribution March 11 bowed the digital edition Nancy Drew: Drew’s Clues for cable video-on-demand, pay-per-view and download-to-own the same day as the DVD release. The digital copy, marketed through the studio’s “Movies that Pop” series, includes interactive features, trivia and more. – Erik Gruenwedel CDSA: Industries Fight Piracy By Chris Tribbey A QUINTA, Calif. — Representatives from music, gaming and film industries shared tactics in tackling piracy at the 38th annual Content Delivery and Storage Association Forum March 8. They shared similar concerns that their industries may have too many trade groups fighting the same battle and similar obstacles in educating the public and their own executives. Richard Atkinson, VP of global antipiracy strategy and operations for Walt Disney Studios, represents the industry that’s hardest hit in terms of dollars lost to piracy — more than $7 billion a year, according to the Motion Picture Association of America. “If [our product] gets out there, it’s $25 million [we’ve lost] …” Atkinson said, explaining what he tells Disney employees. “The marketing people can weigh the risks [of screeners].” He said that what affects music also affects movies. “We’re all stitched together,” he said. “If someone is downloading music, they’re doing it with films too.” Jonathan Bender, SVP of operations and digital media for Concord Music Group, said while digital music is slowly pushing CDs out the door, physical discs wouldn’t disappear overnight. For gaming, the risk is less digital and more physical, said John Mott, director of international security and risk management for Electronic Arts, pointing to lost shipments and the lack of control in warehouses. L I EMA ADDS DIGITAL DAY The Entertainment Merchants Association has added a “Digital Media Day” on June 26 to its 2008 Home Media Expo. The one-day event will address business models, marketing, consumer preferences and technology. – Billy Gil Atkinson said that when music first started losing money to piracy, the film and gaming industries didn’t do enough to help their entertainment brother. Now everyone’s paying the price. Timothy Gorman, director of worldwide antipiracy compliance for the Content Delivery and Storage Association, said the three industries should look into joining forces to combat piracy, especially when it comes to lobbying the government. “Disney does a good job, Concord does a good job, EA does a good job [to fight piracy],” he said. “Can they work together to do a great job?” Little Miss Sunshine Hulu Goes Live By Erik Gruenwedel BC Universal and News Corp.’s joint Internet video distribution Web site, Hulu.com, went live March 12. Bowed in beta last October, Hulu is envisioned as a competitor to YouTube and a conduit for new and archived ad-supported TV content, movies and clips from Universal Studios, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures Television, Lionsgate and MGM Studios, as well as archival sports highlights. Hulu content is available at partner sites, including MySpace, Yahoo, AOL, MSN and Comcast’s Fancast.com. However, user interactivity will be limited to Hulu.com. Hulu CEO Jason Kilar said the site sold out its ad spots due to the demand by marketers for professional video versus potentially pirated non-user generated content. Phil Leigh, analyst with Inside Digital Media, said Hulu had too many commercials, but couldn’t argue against the content. “They have professionally produced content — the stuff people want to see,” he said. N LIONSGATE, APPLE TO OFFER DIGITAL MOVIE FILES By Erik Gruenwedel I PARAMOUNT ON FACEBOOK Paramount Pictures has put thousands of movie clips on Facebook — the first major studio to do so — through an application called VooZoo, in partnership with Los Angeles-based developer FanRocket, according to The Associated Press. The service launched March 10. DVDs of the films will be promoted via a button that appears at the end of each clip. – Billy Gil L ionsgate said it is working with Apple Inc. to include an iTunes digital file with new DVD releases. The company will include a digital copy with the May 27 special edition DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases of Rambo. It will do the same with The Eye later this summer. The digital files can be viewed on a PC, Mac, iPod video, iPhone or via Apple TV. They can only be transferred to one iTunes account. Lionsgate offers digital editions of 3:10 to Yuma, Good Luck Chuck, War, “Weeds,” and catalog titles Dirty Dancing and Reservoir Dogs at the iTunes store.
